Larry Ellison has bought himself a revolt. MySQL refuses to go gentle into
Oracle’s uncertain arms.
Monty Widenius, principal author of the original version of the open source
database and a founder of the MySQL company that Sun bought last year for a
billion dollars, is proposing to wrest control of the widgetry from Oracle.
He has kicked off a “vendor-neutral” consortium called the Open Database
Alliance that he envisions being the hub of MySQL development, binaries,
derivative code, tools, enhancements as well as training and support provided
by a collection of open source companies like Percona, a MySQL services and
support firm and co-founder of the consortium.
He has sucked out of Sun all but three of the key MySQL developers who, he
says, “understand the whole system,” for his own start-up Monty Program
Ab and expects the missing three to join him soon too. He... (more)

Advances in clustering technology have redefined the price-to-performance
curve for many High Performance Computing (HPC) application areas. The use of
specialized high-speed interconnects and fast commodity processors have
pushed the envelope to where it is today.
Not all applications need this level of hardware (and cost) to achieve
leading-edge price to performance. Indeed, there have been several
technological advances that may invite a step back from the traditional
edge-of-technology approach to HPC clustering. These advances include the
following developments:
Introduction of low-cost high-performance multi-core processors Introduction
of high-density motherboards and packaging solutions Introduction of
optimized Linux Gigabit Ethernet performance Of particular importance is the
fact that these advances are in the commodity sector where high demand and

This article tries to demonstrate that Java can be more productive than Ruby.
We are going to develop the same application of the article Rolling with Ruby
on Rails Revisited (part 1 [1] and part 2 [2]) but using POJO [3]s annotated
with JPA [4] and a Model Driven Framework, OpenXava [5] in this case. The
result is that with less code, and less time you obtain a more powerful

Ruby and rails: The regressive framework
Ruby on rails [6] is so elegant, so easy, so productive. I cannot avoid read
and heard continuously these comments. For example, the article Rolling with
Ruby on Rails Revisited of Bill Walton says:
“What would you think if I told you that you can develop a web application
at least ten times faster with Rails than you can with a typical Java
framework?”
Oops! Ten times faster!
Well, after these comments I decided to learn Ruby on Rails. I ne... (more)

Prevas (STO:PREVB):
Traditionally module market has been very influenced by x86-based products,
but with Freescale i.MX6, ARM has largely made its appearance on the scene of
the Computer-On-Module (COM) market, where Freescale i.MX6 offers a CPU
series with both 1, 2 and 4 cores in the chips and with the same footprint.
congatec has launched a COM board with this CPU, conga-QMX6 that in autumn
2013 goes into series production.
With 1, 2 or 4 cores and a clock at 1GHz, the time of the small operating
systems has passed and conga-QMX6 is almost begging to run Android, Linux or
Windows Embedded on it. Most COM boards are supplied with a development BSP
(Board Support Package), which you can choose to use for the start of the
project, but for the matter of stability and maintenance purposes this is not
recommendable for the production of final products. If you want an e... (more)

Feb. 10, 2019 03:15 AM EST | By Liz McMillan When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation.

And as digital natives make up more and more of the modern workforce, the appetite for user-friendly, cloud-based services grows. The center of work is shifting to the user and to the cloud.
