Ex-IBM Honcho Claims He’s Innocent

Early Bird at Clod Expo The rumor mill says that Apple could be out with that tablet it’s supposed to have up its sleeve in March or April. According to Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner, it’s supposed to have a 10.1-inch iPhone-style multi-touch screen and a $1,000 price tag. It would compete with Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader. Reiner says Apple’s been pitching book publishers on a non-executive deal giving them 70% of the money, more lucrative for them than Amazon, which is thought to demand 50% of the take. Reiner thinks Apple means to make a million of the widgets a month to start. Robert Moffat, the former high-ranking IBM executive arrested in October in the Galleon insider trading roundup, asked a New York court Wednesday to dismiss the SEC's civil charges against him. He claims he didn't pass material insider information on IBM and Sun earnings or AMD's sale... (more)

UC Cloud Replication Services

A really hot best practice we’re working on now is ‘UC Cloud Replication Services‘. This refers to the combination of Unified Communications (UC) and Cloud Replication Services, as defined in this introduction to the pioneering work Allstream is conducting in this area. As well as these new Cloud services for enhanced DR, Allstream also has a leading UC practice. Their expert product manager Thabang will be joining us to profile what they offer here, on our next webinar with them: Cloud BCP – PAYG Disaster Recovery Nortel 2.0 This focus area is key to one of our strategic themes of ‘Nortel 2.0‘. In short this idea is that Nortel may be gone but the people and therefore intellectual capital is still widely available in Canada, and therefore could be most effectively applied by keeping focused in the same area: Telecomms. But of course adapted for the modern Cloud world... (more)

Observations from Mobile World Congress 2012

I attended the 2012 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The following are my personal observations and extrapolations from the show based on my conversations with operators, customer meetings, colleagues and walking the floor. 1. LTE- Where’s the Party? – Last year was the year of LTE.  Vendors were flouting it and operators were demonstrating how it would change the world.  Even Verizon Wireless (an operator which never shows up at these things) had a big display showcasing LTE.  I think that this year the cold reality is kicking in – now that we have built it (or building it) will people actually use it?  What is the killer app?  Will all of that projected mobile video really go over LTE or will it be accessed from Wi-Fi powered tablets?  And of course, the elephant in the room – what will Apple do?  Will it bless the industry with its ... Microsoft Office Puts Emphasis on Subscriptions with Office 365

Office 365 Microsoft just announced the next version of its Office productivity suite. If you were hoping that Microsoft would simplify how it delivers Office to its users, though, you will be sorely disappointed. The new Office will come in numerous online and offline versions, as well as the already semi-announced version for Windows RT tablets. In essence, Microsoft is taking an approach that’s somewhat similar to what Adobe is doing with its new Creative Cloud (though without making all of its tools available for just one subscription price): Office 365, which is currently just a set of online tools, will become a subscription service that will allow users to “stream Office 365 to any Windows 7 or Windows 8 Internet-connected computer.” At the same time, though, Microsoft will also continue to make Office available as traditional desktop software with a perpetu... Google Has “No Plans to Build Out Windows Apps”

In what can be considered a major dig at Microsoft, Clay Bavor, product management director at Google Apps told V3 that the company is not bringing native Gmail or Google Drive apps to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Bavor said Google has ”no plans to build out Windows apps” and that the company  is “very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8.” As we begin to see a shift toward users storing their data in the cloud, the lack of Google Drive on the newest Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 is an alarming concern. It’s true there are alternatives such as Microsoft’s SkyDrive, but no native Gmail app for either OSes suggests Windows is no longer a priority to develop for anymore. Instead, Bavor says that the company will continue to “make big investments in mobile in 2013 with the goal of having beautiful... (more)

Knative allows developers not only to address the challenges of using managed services, but also they can jump into the serverless world easier without specific expertise of Linux containers, Kubernetes, or cloud infrastructure platform. But what does this really look like if you're, say, a Java developer? What's the full developer experience? In this session, I will walk you through the beauty of Knative, via a live demo, in terms of developing the modern app on Spring Boot, building Linux containers, deploying it superfast, and scaling down to zero automatically along with workloads. In the end, you will feel better how cool Knative is for developers to make it more comfortable, easier, and quicker to run serverless cloud-native apps.
DevOps is a world surrounded by information, starting from a single commit and ending in roll out to production. In this talk, I'll introduce you to the world of Taboola DevOps data collection, to better understand what goes on under the hood. The system we've developed in-house helps us collect and analyse the entire DevOps process from the very first commit all the way to production. It provides us a full clear view with a drill-down toolset that helps keep us away from the dark side. Our KPI's moved from being abstracted ideas to data driven goals, which we can measure and act upon. We're living in a data driven world when all business components are based on our clients action and reaction, why not doing the same thing within our DevOps eco-system?
There has been a movement recently about finding security-related issues earlier in the development and deployment pipeline. It's about catching security issues before things hit the fan. :)In this talk, we will talk about what it means to shift left from the container security point of view. Financial benefits and ROI of the shift left security model. We will also discuss some practical examples and best practices to shift security further left for Kubernetes/containerized environment. As the world moves towards adopting containers, security remains one of the top concerns for the IT teams. In this talk, we will talk about what has changed with containers in terms of attack surface, and how to secure your fully containerized or hybrid semi-containerized environment.
Today, Kubernetes is the defacto standard if you want to run container workloads in a production environment. As we set out to build our next generation of products, and run them smoothly in the cloud, we needed to move to Kubernetes too! In the process of building tools like KubeXray and GoCenter we learned a whole bunch. Join this talk to learn how to get started with Kubernetes and how we got started at JFrog building our new tools. After the session you will know: How we got to Kubernetes (and why we chose it)
