"People are a lot more knowledgeable about APIs now. There are two types of
people who work with APIs - IT people who want to use APIs for something
internal and the product managers who want to do something outside APIs for
people to connect to them," explained Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice
President at SOA Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 15th Cloud Expo,
held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Internet of Things, Data and APIs
When something as simple as an API can integrate massive amounts of data
into, and through, a wide variety of applications, any company can be a
digital enterprise. There is a perception that some industries are using
technology to innovate, while others languish in antiquated ways of running
their business. But in our massively connected age, it's rare to find
examples where technology isn't... (more)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Across the globe, LED and smart
streetlights are helping to establish smart cities and represent a critical
layer of the emerging 'Internet of Things.' With rapid urbanization and the
rise of global megacities, energy efficiency is becoming critical in public
lighting infrastructure. By 2025, cities and municipalities are projected to
save $11.3bn (more than 86,000 GWh) per year from efficient LED and smart
streetlights. Investment in this technology will reach $72 billion
cumulatively by 2025, according to a study published today by Northeast
Group, LLC.
Cities and municipalities are beginning to replace their streetlights with
more efficient light-emitting diode (LED), or solid-state lighting. They are
also increasingly adding communications and sensors to streetlights, part of
a larger trend towards the 'Internet of Thin... (more)
Kin Lane recently wrote a couple of blogs about why copyrighting an API is
not common. I couldn’t agree more that copyrighting APIs is uncommon. First
of all, the API definition is just an interface (It is the implementation
detail that is important, and needs to be guarded), so it doesn’t make any
sense to copyright an interface. (It is almost like copyrighting a pretty
face ). Secondly, the whole idea of exposing an API is you are looking for
others to finish the work you started by just providing the plumbing work.
Why would anyone want to get involved with a copyrighted API and finish your
work for you?
Kin Lane says, “API copyright would prevent the reuse and remix of common
or successful API patterns within a space. We are at a point where
aggregating common, popular APIs into single, standardized interfaces is
emerging as the next evolution in web and mobil... (more)
A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They're called
Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based
Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact
on the data center and on server computing in general.
What Is a Microserver...and What Isn't
Although few people are familiar with Microservers today, their impact will
be felt very soon. This is a new category of computing platform that is
available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some
years to come - growing to over 20% of the server market by 2016 according to
Oppenheimer ("Cloudy With A Chance of ARM" Oppenheimer Equity Research
Industry Report).
According to Chris Piedmonte, CEO of Suvola Corporation - a software and
services company focused on creating preconfigured and scalable Microserver

The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.

The World's Many IoTs: Which Are the Most Important?
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics,
wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more.
Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a
diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in
all these areas.
In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger
Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will
have the most profound effect on the world, and what should we expect to see

Ten Myths of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage
technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has
come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions
about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt
this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo
Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing
at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud
computing that still exist today.
Cloud Computing Journal: Why do you think organizations often misunderstand
cloud computing?
Rex Wang: Overall, the understanding of cloud computing has come a long way
over the past few years. Cloud technology is being embraced by a growing
number of organizations each year, while other... (more)

IoT & Smart Cities Stories By Yeshim Deniz Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.

Jan. 26, 2019 01:30 PM EST | By Courtney Abud Where many organizations get into trouble, however, is that they try to have a broad and deep knowledge in each of these areas. This is a huge blow to an organization's productivity. By automating or outsourcing some of these pieces, such as databases, infrastructure, and networks, your team can instead focus on development, testing, and deployment. Further, organizations that focus their attention on these areas can eventually move to a test-driven development structure that condenses several l...
