Web Performance 101: Optimizing JavaScript
By Kameerath Kareem
JavaScript redefined web applications ushering in a new era of dynamic
websites with fluid responsive designs. It has gained a strong following
among developers, popular libraries and frameworks like JQuery and Angular JS
are all built with JavaScript. The endless design possibilities that
JavaScript provides coupled with the numerous libraries available today makes
it an indispensable part of web application development.
Why JavaScript?
Today, almost every website uses JavaScript to provide an interactive digital
experience. JavaScript made it possible to refresh/load sections of the page
without having to reload the entire page every time the user clicks on a
button or submits a form. Since scripts can manipulate DOM elements, it gave
the developers more flexibility in designing and coding applications. ... (more)
Kin Lane recently wrote a couple of blogs about why copyrighting an API is
not common. I couldn’t agree more that copyrighting APIs is uncommon. First
of all, the API definition is just an interface (It is the implementation
detail that is important, and needs to be guarded), so it doesn’t make any
sense to copyright an interface. (It is almost like copyrighting a pretty
face ). Secondly, the whole idea of exposing an API is you are looking for
others to finish the work you started by just providing the plumbing work.
Why would anyone want to get involved with a copyrighted API and finish your
work for you?
Kin Lane says, “API copyright would prevent the reuse and remix of common
or successful API patterns within a space. We are at a point where
aggregating common, popular APIs into single, standardized interfaces is
emerging as the next evolution in web and mobil... (more)
A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They're called
Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based
Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact
on the data center and on server computing in general.
What Is a Microserver...and What Isn't
Although few people are familiar with Microservers today, their impact will
be felt very soon. This is a new category of computing platform that is
available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some
years to come - growing to over 20% of the server market by 2016 according to
Oppenheimer ("Cloudy With A Chance of ARM" Oppenheimer Equity Research
Industry Report).
According to Chris Piedmonte, CEO of Suvola Corporation - a software and
services company focused on creating preconfigured and scalable Microserver
appliances for deployin... (more)

The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.

The World's Many IoTs: Which Are the Most Important?
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics,
wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more.
Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a
diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in
all these areas.
In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger
Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will
have the most profound effect on the world, and what should we expect to see
over the next couple of years.

Ten Myths of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage
technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has
come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions
about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt
this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo
Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing
at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud
computing that still exist today.
Cloud Computing Journal: Why do you think organizations often misunderstand
cloud computing?
Rex Wang: Overall, the understanding of cloud computing has come a long way
over the past few years. Cloud technology is being embraced by a growing
number of organizations each year, while other... (more)

Building video calling apps is no small task. Learning about video codecs,
signaling, and presence is just the beginning when it comes to
implementation. At PubNub, we have partnered our technology with WebRTC to
make integration fast and easy to build video chat software. Out of the box,
our WebRTC Framework will power audio, video, and data communication between
two browsers.
Want to get an idea of what it'll look like when you're finished? Take a look
at our live, working demo and code walk through, or watch the video below, or
keep reading.
Get Started by Installing the PubNub WebRTC SDK
The first step to building your own video calling app is to install both
PubNub and our WebRTC SDK. To install both of these, first download the
WebRTC SDK to your local project somewhere. Then include both libraries:
IoT & Smart Cities Stories By Yeshim Deniz Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.

Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500 companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still survive. Similar percentages are found throug... Jan. 20, 2019 07:30 PM EST | By Chander Damodaran Over the course of two days, in addition to insightful conversations and presentations delving into the industry's current pressing challenges, there was considerable buzz about digital transformation and how it is enabling global enterprises to accelerate business growth.
Blockchain has been a term that people hear but don't quite understand. The most common myths about blockchain include the assumption that it is private, or that there is only one blockchain, and the idea that blockchain is... Jan. 20, 2019 02:45 PM EST | By Courtney Abud Where many organizations get into trouble, however, is that they try to have a broad and deep knowledge in each of these areas. This is a huge blow to an organization's productivity. By automating or outsourcing some of these pieces, such as databases, infrastructure, and networks, your team can instead focus on development, testing, and deployment. Further, organizations that focus their attention on these areas can eventually move to a test-driven development structure that condenses several l... Jan. 20, 2019 11:00 AM EST | By Zakia Bouachraoui Never mind that we might not know what the future holds for cryptocurrencies and how much values will fluctuate or even how the process of mining a coin could cost as much as the value of the coin itself - cryptocurrency mining is a hot industry and shows no signs of slowing down. However, energy consumption to mine cryptocurrency is one of the biggest issues facing this industry. Burning huge amounts of electricity isn't incidental to cryptocurrency, it's basically embedded in the core of "mini... Nov. 11, 2018 04:00 PM EST Reads: 3,170 | By Pat Romanski Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on... Nov. 11, 2018 11:45 AM EST Reads: 2,284 | By Elizabeth White IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio.
