Five Reasons to Love Mylar

Modern development environments bring multiple integrated tools to developers' fingertips. Integration of editors and compilers for multiple languages, database browsers, framework-specific development tools, and more are commonplace and considered by many to be entry-level features: the minimum support required to be taken seriously. But modern development environments miss out when it comes to integrating the most important part: the developer. Bringing multiple tools that work well together with a harmonized look and feel help a software developer be productive. However, as systems built using integrated development environments get more and more complex with larger and larger code bases, just having tools that are easy to find and use isn't enough. Modern developers need a development environment that focuses first class tools on the artifacts that they care ab... (more)

Xen, KVM and the Linux Choice

There has been a significant amount of derision heaped on Xen after its successful integration into the Linux kernel last month. One wouldn't think such criticism is warranted, since the inclusion of Xen in the Linux kernel puts it on equal footing with KVM. Yet, when Oracle's Wim Coekaerts announced the inclusion of Xen code for DomO and DomU support in Linux, many industry observers took the opportunity to lambaste Xen for being too-little-too-late. True, KVM has been more successful in the briefer time it has existed. Xen has had plenty of opportunity to be the go-to virtualization platform for Linux. KVM, however, exploded in popularity and was fully integrated into the Linux kernel by the time Linux 2.6.20 was released. It's now the virtualization platform of choice for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Canonical's Ubuntu Server, and SUSE Enterprise Server Linux (though... (more)

How to Monetize the OpenStack Wave

After OpenStack was announced at OSCON in the summer of 2010, the degree of momentum behind this new open source platform has been nothing short of spectacular. Startups and enterprises alike have placed their strategic bets to monetize the OpenStack wave in various ways. As an ecosystem insider and one of the founding sponsors of the OpenStack Foundation, I wanted to offer my views on how various organizations are looking to skin this cat. I'd like to focus on three of the many efforts currently underway. These three, in particular, happen to be the most vocal about their position and represent three distinct strategy camps. They are Nebula with its OpenStack appliance; Piston with its PentOS cloud operating system; and Dell's Crowbar, an OpenStack installer. While all these approaches appear radically different on the surface, all three ultimately offer the same e... (more)

MySQL Creator Finally Does Leave Sun

After coming this close to quitting six or seven months ago because he felt MySQL 5.1 wasn't ready to be released, MySQL co-founder and creator Monty Widenius has finally parted way with the company that made him rich. He's going to run his own programming company, Monty Program AB, again and spend his idle hours dabbling in venture capital. He's looking for disruptive open source start-ups. On his blog Monty says Sun still hasn't made the changes he wanted to fix MySQL's development and community problems. He says, "The main reason for leaving was that I am not satisfied with the way the MySQL server has been developed....In particular I would have like to see the server development to be moved to a true open development environment that would encourage outside participation and without any need of differentiation on the source code. Sun has been considering opening up... (more)

Flashback: "I’m Doing a (Free) Operating System (Just a Hobby)" – Linus Torvalds

Twenty-two years ago today, a Finnish student by the name of Linus Torvalds sent an email that is now one of the iconic communications of the Internet era. In it, he told the comp.os.minix usenet newsgroup – a newsgroup for all those using minix (from "mini-Unix"), a Unix-like computer operating system based on a microkernel architecture created by computer science professor Andy Tanenbaum – that he was "doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386 (486) AT clones." The rest, as they say, is history.  From that fateful email in 1992 grew the Linux operating system. Torvalds' 25 August 1991 email ended with a P.S. about his new, free and as-yet-unnamed OS: "[I]t's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other t... (more)

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...
