Data Management for the Cloud Era
As data explodes in quantity, importance and from new sources, the need for
managing and protecting data residing across physical, virtual, and cloud
environments grow with it. Managing data includes protecting it, indexing and
classifying it for true, long-term management, compliance and E-Discovery.
Commvault can ensure this with a single pane of glass solution - whether in a
private cloud, a Service Provider delivered public cloud or a hybrid cloud
environment - across the heterogeneous enterprise.

Government Cloud Computing on Ulitzer
Frank Gens of IDC recently provided an excellent overview of the the new
"Cloud Computing Era". His description of "cloud computing" and "cloud
services" really highlights the difference between the commercial cloud
computing market and the Federal cloud computing market.
(Paraphrased from Frank Gens' article)
When people talk about “cloud computing”, they are usually referring to
things like software-as-a-service (SaaS) and storage or server capacity as a
service. They may also talk about the many “non-IT” business and consumer
services like shopping, banking, selling, collaborating, communicating and
being entertained. In reality, these things represent an on-line delivery and
consumption model for business and consumer services. These users are not
explicitly buying “cloud computing,” but the “cloud services” that
are enabled b... (more)

The President's budget for fiscal year 2010 (FY10) includes $75.8B in
information technology (IT) spending, which is a 7-percent increase from
FY09. Of this, at least $20B will be spent on IT infrastructure investments.
[1] The FY11 budget for IT is projected to be nearly $88B. The government is
actively seeking ways to reduce IT costs, and the FY10 budget request
highlights opportunities for the federal government to achieve significant
long-term cost savings through the adoption of cloud computing technologies:
"Of the investments that will involve up-front costs to be recouped in
outyear savings, cloud-computing is a prime case in point. The Federal
Government will transform its Information Technology Infrastructure by
virtualizing data centers, consolidating data centers and operations, and
ultimately adopting a cloud-computi... (more)

June 2, 2008 - Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz
words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility
computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and
utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used
correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages
and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a
relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a
decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud
computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and
service offerings from big corpora... (more)
Virtualization and cloud computing are promising to change the way in which
IT services are delivered and, in effect, transform computing as we know it
today. I think the promises are likely to come true, if and only if
critical technology issues are addressed.
Nicholas Carr told a recent audience at IDC Directions that "Cloud computing
has become the center of investment and innovation." While he is not a
technologist, his sometimes shocking insight into the transformation of IT
have been prescient, even if he doesn't sweat the details of how complex IT
infrastructures can morph into the equivalent of today's public utilities.
To his credit Carr has predicted the rise of the cloud computing press
release, multiple cloud conferences and panels and even the SaaS
repositioning exercise. He also foresaw the rise in Amazon and Google cloud
announcements, perhaps year... (more)
SYS-CON Events announced today the latest event in its innovative series of
real-world technology conferences, 1st Annual Government IT Conference & Expo
(GovITExpo), a two-day deep dive into the new wave of Internet-based
technologies that are changing the way that Federal agencies leverage,
procure and utilize IT.
GovITExpo, which is being held October 5-6, 2009 in Washington, DC, builds on
the success of SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Expo, the fastest-growing conference
anywhere in the world devoted to the delivery of massively scalable IT as a
service using Internet technologies. Data storage, security and software
services are among the major themes of the technical program.
Cloud Computing will be one of the main tracks. According to the Washington
Post this week, the U.S. Census Bureau is using Salesforce's cloud to manage
the activities of about 100,000 partner or... (more)

Journal" Launched on Ulitzer.
Vinay is currently focused on building the next-generation OSS/BSS platform
for SaaS. He has 15 years of systems design and development experience in the
high-tech industry, with the last 10 years focused on building SaaS and SOA
platforms at companies such as Cisco Systems, BEA Systems, Jamcracker and
IBM. He is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.
Platform as a service (PaaS) is a big piece of the cloud computing puzzle,
the other pieces being Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and Application
software as a service (SaaS). PaaS enables the delivery of solution
frameworks and components as on-demand, pay-as-you-go services. Some examples
of these are Google Apps Engine, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Windows Azure
platform, SalesForce For... (more)

Did you ever have the invisible dream? I don't like it. It's the one
where I have "the answer" to a big problem (usually involving giant,
malevolent aliens) but everyone walks right past me because I'm invisible. I
had that feeling yesterday reading James Urquhart's blog titled, "Application
packaging for cloud computing: A proposal".
He'd written a series of posts considering deployment and operations in
infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS)
environments. Looking at the impact of cloud computing on the use of virtual
machines and operating systems, Urquhart wrote, "The very heart and soul of
software systems design is being challenged by the decoupling of
infrastructure architectures from the software architectures that run on
them."
Yes. Exactly what I've been saying. Exactly what AppZero does in

A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing.
Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active
players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we
identified back in January of this year, to half as many again - testimony,
if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the
"Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites cited. As ever we encourage software engineers, developers, IT
operations managers, and new/growing companies in every case to "suck it and
see" by downloading or otherwise sampling the offering in question for
themselves.
