Business Intelligence at Cloud Expo
Most people think of traditional business intelligence (BI) as a collection
of business-critical information from inside the enterprise.
However, consumer comments, independent reviews, and market reports online
are crucial pieces of information coming from the outside that infinitely
affect any organization.
Applications, blogs, social networks, and forums where content creation,
sharing, and understanding takes place should be part of business
intelligence. Locating and analyzing this unstructured data can only be
carried out with a different kind of business intelligence solution - one we
call semantic intelligence.
What Is Semantic Intelligence?
Semantic intelligence provides early identification and analysis of consumer
sentiment, purchasing trends, market deals, and competitive information - and
uncovers this data not only fr... (more)

When we talk about the impact of BYOD and BYOA and the Internet of Things, we
often focus on the impact on data center architectures. That's because there
will be an increasing need for authentication, for access control, for
security, for application delivery as the number of potential endpoints
(clients, devices, things) increases. That means scale in the data center.
What we gloss over, what we skip, is that before any of these "things" ever
makes a request to access an application it had to execute a DNS query.
Every. Single. Thing.
Maybe that's because we assume DNS can handle the load. So far it's done
well. You rarely, if ever, hear of disruptions or outages due directly to the
execution of DNS. Oh, there has been some issues with misconfiguration of DNS
and of exploitation of DNS (hijacking, illicit use in reflection attacks,

The cloud is coming of age. Amazon took another huge leap forward when it
announced that EC2 is now out of beta, together with an SLA that is evidence
of Amazon’s commitment to provide top-notch service. Their uptime has been
stellar, and they are now standing behind their offering contractually in a
much stronger way, and signaling how customers can set their expectations.
Read about the announcement on the AWS blog and on their CTO’s blog.
The advent of Windows on EC2 is welcome news too. Even though Windows is not
typically the OS used for serving highly variable workloads, it is a sign of
the cloud maturing that even the more static workloads typical of Windows
deployments will be more easily allocated and managed using cloud resources.

A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing.
Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active
players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we
identified back in January of this year, to half as many again - testimony,
if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the
"Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites cited. As ever we encourage software engineers, developers, IT
operations managers, and new/growing companies in every case to "suck it and
see" by downloading or otherwise sampling the offering in question for
themselves.

Appirio Tuesday launched a cloud-based professional service automation (PSA)
solution on Salesforce.com’s Force.com platform.
Called simply Professional Services Enterprise, it’s supposed to be
designed for the most sophisticated professional service organizations,
delivering end-to-end support for managing people, projects, customers and
transactions.
Appirio claims that the widgetry is different from other solutions in
supporting a services business end-to-end, bridging the gap between how
projects are sold and how they are delivered. And then of course there are
the cloud’s TCO advantages.
It says it can help you make your numbers: As the quarter closes in, services
executives can identify a project that has been booked but not scheduled, and
assign resources to accelerate the project’s delivery to meet the
quarter’s sales goals.
It also says it can help put th... (more)
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
After the Enron debacle, the American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants (AICPA) assumed a leadership role in the rush toward an
international set of accounting standards (IFRS). The long and proud
independent standard setting process in the United States of America is being
phased out in favor of an international standard setting process with an
international governing body, the International Accounting Standards Board
(IASB). So what’s the big deal?
Confusing Standards?
So will we have a single, simple, principles-based global set of accounting
standards? Not so fast, my friend! Initially, public companies will be
required to convert to IFRS while private US companies could choose to adopt
IFRS for small- and mid-sized entities or could, along with not-for-profit
organizations, continue to report under g... (more)
Welcome to Enterprise2.us, our new channel on Ulitzer focused on Enterprise
2.0, how businesses can use social media internally.
Where this overlaps with Cloud computing is a very hot area for new
ventures, as it helps to bring together a number of disparate and also quite
technical strands and packages them into business and user-centric solutions.
Enterprise social media
The term 'Enterprise 2.0' was coined by Andrew McAfee, who became widely
known for the topic following his MIT white paper 'Dawn of Emergent
Collaboration'.
This described how organizations could greatly improve their knowledge
management capabilities through adopting the social software that powers Web
2.0 sites, like Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter et al. He described a number of
points about improving communications, like 'signaling' through RSS feeds.
As well as the technology he also talks about ... (more)
