The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they
generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to
adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental
questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to
conduct invasive surveillance of their customers.

Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data
telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection,
regulatory scrutiny and increasing consumer lack of trust in technology in

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?
Eric Miraglia of Yahoo!
1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the
iPhone SDK vs using AJAX?
2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to
make it faster?
3. When it comes to accessibility, how do I know what's required of me for
my rich web apps? Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... (more)
The bad blood between Facebook and Google may go deeper than anyone has
really realized to date. The spat became public earlier this year when
Facebook banned Google’s Friend Connect, theoretically over security issues
(but really over competitive issues).
The source of the feud: Facebook chose Microsoft as their ad partner and
investor a year ago; Google had already put their money behind MySpace. But
beyond that, Google was also quick to compete with Facebook platform by
launching Open Social with most of Facebook’s competitors, cementing the
ill-will.
Now Facebook may be shooting itself in the foot to spite its face (or however
the saying goes) by ignoring the new Android platform. From what we hear,
Facebook has dedicated exactly zero resources to creating a version of the
service for Android, and has no plans to launch anything at all. That’s
despite the fact... (more)
Now that Google is in, the game is on. As I mentioned in my previous post,
software is now ruling the mobile industry. As in the PC world, the big
contenders are Apple with iPhone, Google with Android, and Microsoft with
Windows Mobile.
But the big questions are: which one is better and which one is going to
ultimately win?
While it is hard to objectively answer this question, here is my first
attempt to create a simple score card. I have created a “4 Ss Scorecard”
that I think is quite representative of the mobile market need.
Openness:
The first property is openness, which represents how easy it is for
developers to build and deploy applications and users to download and install
them.
From a user point of view all three phones allow users to easily install
applications over the air (aka OTA) or via cradle. From a developer angle,
Microsoft and Apple have a si... (more)
A new telecom paradigm is on the verge of becoming reality. Not a disruptive
technology, not the right brain flash of a new radical idea – rather it is
a logical development of existing infrastructure using better operational
execution. It is an acknowledgement of fiber optic infrastructure as an
inherent requirement in the development of the 4th utility – broadband
Internet, compute capacity, and storage as a basic right for all Americans.
The “utility” label has merit. Just as we need roads, water, and
electricity to function in the modern world, we need communications. Much
like the roads, electrical distribution, and water distribution systems
crossing North America, the communications infrastructure follows a similar
matrix of hubs, spokes, loops, and major exchange points interconnecting
every square mile of the continent. The matrix includes a well-interconnec... (more)

The United States has outstanding LTE coverage compared to other markets,
however worldwide carriers are beginning to upgrade their networks to deliver
the high-speed wireless technology to their customers. According to a new
report from ABI Research, the total mobile data traffic for 2012 amounted to
13,412 petabytes, an increase of 69% from 2011 when 3G data usage accounted
for 46% of all traffic. The accelerated adoption of 4G LTE is expected to
increase in 2013, however. The research firm estimates that LTE data traffic
will grow an astonishing 207% year-over-year in 2013, compared to 99% growth
for 3G traffic. The increase for LTE traffic comes as a result of added 4G
deployments in developed markets throughout the world. There are still a
number of markets that have not yet upgraded to the technology, though.
