A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They're called
Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based
Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact
on the data center and on server computing in general.
What Is a Microserver...and What Isn't
Although few people are familiar with Microservers today, their impact will
be felt very soon. This is a new category of computing platform that is
available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some
years to come - growing to over 20% of the server market by 2016 according to
Oppenheimer ("Cloudy With A Chance of ARM" Oppenheimer Equity Research
Industry Report).
According to Chris Piedmonte, CEO of Suvola Corporation - a software and
services company focused on creating preconfigured and scalable Microserver

In an Open Letter published yesterday, September 2, 2013, on The Official
Microsoft Blog at Microsoft's TechWeb site, Steve Ballmer and Stephen Elop
wrote to Microsoft stakeholders the following:
"Nokia and Microsoft have always dreamed big – we dreamed of putting a
computer on every desk, and a mobile phone in every pocket, and we’ve come
a long way toward realizing those dreams.
Today marks a moment of reinvention.
Nokia has an identity spanning 150 years of heritage, innovation, excellence,
and change which began and will continue in Finland and around the world.
From humble beginnings as a paper mill factory, to manufacturing rubber boots
and car tires, and then to mobile phones, reinvention is in Nokia’s blood.
Nokia will now write its next chapter, focused on enabling mobility through
its leadership in networking, mapping & location, and advanced technologies.

DevOps Summit 2015 New York, co-located with the 16th International Cloud
Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY
- announces that it is now accepting Keynote Proposals.
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo will expand the DevOps community, enable a
wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers
alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development
time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support
time generally. Tim... (more)
What do you get when you combine Big Data technologies….like Pig and
Hive? A flying pig?
No, you get a “Logical Data Warehouse”.
My general prediction is that Cloudera and Hortonworks are both aggressively
moving to fulfilling a vision which looks a lot like Gartner’s “Logical
Data Warehouse”….namely, “the next-generation data warehouse that
improves agility, enables innovation and responds more efficiently to
changing business requirements.”
In 2012, Infochimps (now CSC) leveraged its early use of stream processing,
NoSQLs, and Hadoop to create a design pattern which combined real-time,
ad-hoc, and batch analytics. This concept of combining the best-in-breed Big
Data technologies will continue to advance across the industry until the
entire legacy (and proprietary) data infrastructure stack will be replaced
with a new (and open) one.
As this is happening, I predi... (more)
There’s been lots of buzz on the virtualization front over the past month
… In August, Microsoft announced the RTM version of Windows Server 2012
R2 and System Center 2012 R2, the latest major releases of the Windows Server
and System Center families. In addition, at VMworld this year, VMware
announced the latest edition of their vSphere hypervisor platform: VMware
vSphere 5.5.
IT Pros have been very interested in learning about the pros and
cons presented by each offering – particularly because the total cost of
Windows Server 2012 R2 + System Center 2012 R2 can be quite attractive in
comparison to VMware’s offerings.
More information: See Shopping for Private Clouds for a sample cost
comparison between Microsoft and VMware virtualization solutions based on
real-world requirements.
With so many features called by differing names in each virtualization

When we talk about the impact of BYOD and BYOA and the Internet of Things, we
often focus on the impact on data center architectures. That's because there
will be an increasing need for authentication, for access control, for
security, for application delivery as the number of potential endpoints
(clients, devices, things) increases. That means scale in the data center.
What we gloss over, what we skip, is that before any of these "things" ever
makes a request to access an application it had to execute a DNS query.
Every. Single. Thing.
Maybe that's because we assume DNS can handle the load. So far it's done
well. You rarely, if ever, hear of disruptions or outages due directly to the
execution of DNS. Oh, there has been some issues with misconfiguration of DNS
and of exploitation of DNS (hijacking, illicit use in reflection attacks,
et... (more)

The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through.
