From CloudEXPO TV Archives:
The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they
generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to
adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental
questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to
conduct invasive surveillance of their customers.

Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data
telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection,
regulatory scrutiny and increasing consumer lack of trust in technology in
general.

IT is the functional area where organizations can most effectively and
immediately cut costs and positively impact environmental change. Desktop
virtualization technologies leverage the unused computing power of a single
computer, creating an efficient alternative to traditional desktop-per-user
computing.
"There is no obstacle that can stand in the way of millions of voices calling
for change." In the week of President Obama's inauguration, his words are a
noble call to us all to rise to meet the best in ourselves, many of us are
wondering, 'But how do I tangibly effect change in my own life? Or in my own
organization?'
President Obama built his campaign on the promise of economic stimulus and
aggressive support for green technologies. Recently, he selected alternative
energy supporter and Nobel-prize winning physicist Steven Chu to head the

Ever since I first published here my tentative list of Top 50 Bloggers on
Cloud Computing it became clear that an expansion would be needed before too
long. Thanks to community feedback via my Twitter account
(http://twitter.com/jg21) here goes - just three months before Cloud
Expo Silicon Valley (November 7-10) - with an expanded roster, listed as
before in alphabetical order since I am making no attempt at this stage to
rank the various blogs, merely to map - and celebrate - their existence.

Five Reasons to Ditch Email Alerts
Want to improve your email alerts? Think again
Monitoring systems can help you better manage your uptime, but even though
you may spend a lot of time configuring checks and thresholds to identify
problems early, your alerts are only as good as your incident response
processes. One of the biggest challenges we’ve seen when talking with
customers is getting bogged down in email alerts. Despite the increasing
disarray of our inboxes, many monitoring systems and IT Operations teams
still rely on email for alerting, even though most agree it’s messy and too
easy to miss. Looking to improve email alerts? Look again. Here are 5 reasons
why you should ditch email alerts if you’re still using them:
1. Email alerts are too easy to miss
“Hey did you see this latest cat video my friend emailed to me?”
Even if you’re staring at your email inbox ... (more)
The Infrastructure-as-a-Service model of early Cloud Computing providers has
focused on making the hardware layer consumable as on-demand compute and
storage capacity. Stuart Charlton, Chief Software Architect for Elastra, will
be giving a session on 'Cloud Computing and the Next-Generation of Enterprise
Architecture' at SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Expo (November 19-21, 2008) - a
pathbreaking adjunct to the 4th International Virtualization Conference &
Expo being held at The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA.
"This is an important first step," Charlton notes, "but for companies to
harness the power of the cloud, it should enhance the alignment driven by
enterprise architecture, driving down the lead times for delivering IT value
to business, from concept to deployment, and through maintenance."
An architecture-aware cloud computing infrastructure, says Charlton, leads to

Cloud Expo Europe €550 Savings here!
Cloud Expo West $800 Savings here!
Got back Friday after a week in the East coast attending the Cloud Expo and
meeting with customers/partners.
I roamed around the exhibits and found one vendor area that was always packed
- Microsoft. Folks were attracted to the huge honking collection of
hardware placed right in middle of their exhibit space. Now Microsoft is not
a hardware vendor - but they seem to have partnered with others to bring this
and show their might. It also needed a special drop of electricity into the
hall - 400V or so using a thick cable!
Cloud computing is a collection of components that has to be delivered
seamlessly - and customers notice. Microsoft seems to know that and they
did an excellent job in presenting their story - of course sharing their
stage with a hardware partner - to deliver that message.

UPDATE 07/12/12:
Netflix posted this downtime explanation and plan to prevent further downtime
on their website in a very informative post-mortem style:
http://techblog.netflix.com/2012/07/lessons-netflix-learned-from-aws-storm.html
VentureBeat also had some nice insight as to the steps forward for Netflix on
AWS: http://venturebeat.com/2012/07/08/netflix-explains-outage/#bmb=1
In summary, Netflix plans on further testing and hardening their application
architecture design and is also looking for new, outside talent in order to
design more resilient applications on AWS in the future.
We all know it’s not easy nor cheap to build in resilience at so many
levels of complex applications. Good luck to Netflix finding qualified cloud
app architecture ninjas… there just aren’t that many professionals in the
entire world that are truly prepared to design apps that scale thei... (more)
