Traditionally, the way people have implemented high availability is by using
a high-availability management package like Linux-HA[1], then configure it in
detail for each application, file system mount, IP address and so on. This
traditional method works quite well, but can be a bit labor intensive -
particularly when using custom or uncommon applications. You may have to
understand the structure of your applications, write some resource agents[2],
debug them, and test them in detail. In addition, every time you change
your mount structure, or other details you've told your HA system, you have
to be sure and update your HA configuration to match - or it might not fail
over correctly the next time.
When you have good resource agents, your HA system will also recover from
application failures - by restarting applications that have failed. This is
a good thing. On... (more)
Over the last several weeks I have been having some interesting conversations
in regards to standardizing cloud based API's. As you know I am a big
proponent of the concept of semantic cloud abstraction. Our Unified Cloud
Interface project (UCI) has attracted more then 350 members in a little over
a month. Before I get into my latest scheme, I want to assure you I still
feel that a singular cloud abstraction interface that can encompass the
entire infrastructure stack as well as emerging cloud centric technologies
through a semantic application interface is truly the future of cloud
computing. We hope to have a functional UCI demo ready for presentation at
the upcoming Wall Street Interoperability Forum, so stay tuned for more news
on that front.
I'm also realistic, most users who have deployed to the cloud have written
their applications specifically for the Amazon... (more)

Larry Ellison has bought himself a revolt. MySQL refuses to go gentle into
Oracle’s uncertain arms.
Monty Widenius, principal author of the original version of the open source
database and a founder of the MySQL company that Sun bought last year for a
billion dollars, is proposing to wrest control of the widgetry from Oracle.
He has kicked off a “vendor-neutral” consortium called the Open Database
Alliance that he envisions being the hub of MySQL development, binaries,
derivative code, tools, enhancements as well as training and support provided
by a collection of open source companies like Percona, a MySQL services and
support firm and co-founder of the consortium.
He has sucked out of Sun all but three of the key MySQL developers who, he
says, “understand the whole system,” for his own start-up Monty Program
Ab and expects the missing three to join him soon too. He... (more)
Oracle Keynote at Cloud Expo
Cloud Computing Expo - Oracle expects the European Commission to wave its
acquisition of Sun through next month MySQL and all without any annoying
conditions.
Oracle president Safra Catz, who’s been wrestling with the EC, said so when
the company posted its fiscal second-quarter results Thursday, another reason
Oracle’s going to have a Merry Christmas.
Catz took a bunch of Oracle users to an EC hearing a week ago to buttress the
company’s claims that the EC had put words in users’ mouths to support
the theory of harm it manufactured to try to stop Oracle from getting MySQL.
Oracle Named Exclusive Diamond Sponsor of Cloud Expo 2010
The meeting was backed by a write-in campaign from hundreds of users as well
as a letter from the US Senate and a public statement from the Justice
Department.
A grateful Catz said, “I want to thank all of our... (more)

The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through.
