(August 20, 2003) - This week, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) issued Web Ontology Language (OWL) as a W3C Candidate Recommendation. Candidate Recommendation is an explicit call for implementations, indicating that the document has been reviewed by all other W3C Working Groups, that the specification is stable, and appropriate for implementation. OWL is a language for defining structured, Web-based ontologies which enable richer integration and interoperability of data across application boundaries. Early adopters of these standards include bioinformatics and medical communities, corporate enterprise and governments. OWL enables a range of descriptive applications including managing Web portals, collections management, content-based searches, enabling intelligent agents, Web services and ubiquitous computing. "OWL is an important step for making data on the Web m... (more)

Tim Berners-Lee Announces W3C RIF Working Group for XML and Other Data

W3C has announced the formation of a new Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group tasked with the challenge of producing a "standard means for exchanging rules on the Web. Rules constitute a key element of the Semantic Web vision, allowing integration, derivation, and transformation of data from multiple sources in a distributed, transparent and scalable manner." The Rule Interchange Format WG has been chartered at least through November 2007 to "produce a core rule language plus extensions which together allow rules to be translated between rule languages and thus transferred between rule systems. The Working Group will have to balance the needs of a diverse community — including Business Rules and Semantic Web users — specifying extensions for which it can articulate a consensus design and which are sufficiently motivated by use cases." According to Tim Berners-L... (more)

Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) Hits the Philippines (Part 2)

The Philippines on Ulitzer I have received so many visitors to my post about Ondoy. So I want to talk a little more about the calamities in the Philippines. First, here are places you can go to help: www.philippineaid.org - I mentioned this one before. www.inquirer.net - This is a newspaper website. They have a lot of information about the Ondoy Relief Drive. www.redcross.org.ph - Yes, they are very active here just like in the US and other places. I want to let everyone know again that this is not the only time that we have trouble in the Philippines. We have so many typhoons every year. Many people die each time we have a bad typhoon. Houses fall into the rivers. Children and old people drown. Little boats sink in the ocean. This happens so many times each year in the Philippines talaga. You can see in my blog here that I wrote a story about Typhoon Feria back in Ju... (more)

Ex-AMD CEO, Like Top IBM Guy, Source of Insider Information: Reports

Hector Ruiz (pictured), then CEO of AMD, was the unidentified source of material information that the busted Galleon ring traded on, according to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. He’s even higher up the totem pole than Robert Moffat, the head of IBM servers and storage who was arrested and charged on October 16 along with five other co-conspirators in what the government called the biggest case of insider trading involving a hedge fund in history. For days now the press corps has been leaning on their sources trying to prove the hypothesis that Ruiz was the uncharged AMD insider described by the government in its criminal and civil indictments as the executive who’s “been preaching this deal for so long,” meaning AMD’s spin-off of its fabs and frankly there weren’t too many of those – that’s where the hypothesis came from. The Wall Street Journal identified R... (more)

The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)
