From Web 3.0 Journal Folks, now this is really really stupid. As the geniuses at O'Reilly and CMP Media struggle to keep the last and what may very well be the final one of their Web 2.0 Expos, another group of brilliant entrepreneurs announced their Web 3.0 Conference, after hearing the news that Web 2.0 is extremely dead now. Web 2.0 was a big scam to start with. The name "Web 2.0" was stolen by Mr. Tim O'Reilly (the prophet) from Imagine Media's brilliant new launch of "Business 2.0 Magazine" during the heyday of the dot-com explosion. The promise of Web 2.0 was that everybody in the software industry would be billionaires just like the folks who introduced MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, etc. Of course this never happened. Now it will be amusing to watch these Web 3.0 jokesters doing a Web 3.0 conference. I am waiting for the announcement of the Web 4.0 conference by ... (more)

Web 2.0 - Web 3.0 - The "Social Web"

Jeremiah Owyang, of the popular Web Strategy by Jeremiah blog (and now an analyst at Forrester), wrote a post several months ago entitled The Irrelevant Corporate Website. And in typical Owyang style, it is thought-provoking and has been translated into several languages, including Greek, Swedish, and German. As one of the owners of a digital marketing and communications company, I'd like to extend Owyang’s argument that the corporate Website is irrelevant, and present a framework that just might make it more relevant than ever. Let's consider the pages of a traditional corporate Website. They include an “about me” page, a contact page, a careers section, and probably a page with news and press releases. The words look good on paper, and, more than likely, a committee gave the final sign-off on the site's content. Visitors frequented these pages... (more)

Chief Networking Officer: The New C-Level Position

From CNO Journal The Chief Networking Officer (CNO) has gained much interest as more companies and executives  have become open minded to challenging the corporate hierarchy structure. The CNO as defined in Wikipedia  by my partner Octavio Pitaluga is right on target.  The definition of the role, however, is in the midst of being clearly defined and I also have my additions/thoughts to the role.  I also believe that the CNO role will be greatly influenced by the company he/she is in, its short and long term goals and efforts, current C Executives forte or lack thereof, social/virtual media efforts, et al… This ever-changing and always evolving role ,I believe, fits right in with those entrepreneur types who, like myself, are driven by being a contributing force to many different layers and projects.  Relationship management skills needs to be assumed natural for th... Did Twitter Just Quietly Start Twitter Connect? If Not, It Should.

Yesterday, on its Twitter API Wiki, Twitter quietly unveiled a “Sign in with Twitter” feature. It’s a very simple idea: It gives you the option to use your Twitter ID as your login for third party services. But what’s more interesting is what Twitter could do with this. Basically, this could be the first step at launching a “Twitter Connect” of sorts, the same type of platform that Facebook is building with Facebook Connect and Google is building with Friend Connect. To most people, at its most basic level, Facebook Connect is useful right now simply because it allows you to sign into other services with your Facebook account. This is nice because hundreds of millions of people already have a Facebook login, and Facebook Connect eliminates the need to fill in all your credentials to yet another service. With millions of people already using Twitter and it is explod... (more)

Brad Templeton: Pioneer Whose Company Began the Dot-Com Era

20 years ago yesterday, Brad Templeton posted to USENET the public launch of ClariNet, his electronic newspaper service delivered over the Internet. According to Templeton, "ClariNet was the first business founded to use the Internet as its platform for business, and the era of the 'dot-com' had begun." He has posted a history of ClariNet here. Among his introductory remarks are the following words: "It seems odd to think of just 20 years as distant history, but the story of the internet is so accelerated that the world has changed in such a short time. ClariNet has a claim on being the first 'dot-com.' Of course, how you judge that depends on your definition of what a dot-com company is, and there are of course other definitions and other companies with valid claims." ... (more)

How are RIAs approaching social media?

By:  D. Bruce Johnston, President, DBJ Associates With hope and fear. If they can publish a few blog posts, advisors can extend the life of a public relations story nearly effortlessly. With social media and its ability to generate attention inexpensively, it’s hard not to consider it.  The difficulty comes in when you ask an RIA what they are willing to pay for it. An RIA must opt for at least a minimal, consistent effort to communicate their subject matter expertise to their prospects. So, while the vehicles underlying all that publicity are almost free, the talent to assemble content and distribute it is not. And that’s the rub: RIAs need to make a commitment to reach out and sustain an effort to attract new prospects into their loop. Whether an RIA is ready to take the deep dive into social media, he or she needs to answer four questions.   Do I like the idea ... (more)

The Social Web: The Game Has Shifted

Marketers historically have paid close attention to site traffic, time on site and page view metrics. Success on today's Internet, the social web, is not guaranteed by any of these numbers. The game has shifted, and most savvy marketers are waking up to the fact that new key performance indicators are more relevant: Quality of site traffic takes precedence over quantity of site traffic Interactions on your site are far more important than just time on site Sharing content from your site leads to effective word of mouth marketing, unlike passive page views The critical foundation underlying these new success metrics is knowledge of your users. Create a Compelling Reason to Register - The "Give to Get" Paradigm This give-to-get scenario is a catalyst that prompts and ensures successful user registration because the user perceives the benefits of membership to be wort... Everyone wants the rainbow - reduced IT costs, scalability, continuity, flexibility, manageability, and innovation. But in order to get to that collaboration rainbow, you need the cloud! In this presentation, we'll cover three areas: First - the rainbow of benefits from cloud collaboration. There are many different reasons why more and more companies and institutions are moving to the cloud. Benefits include: cost savings (reducing on-prem infrastructure, reducing data center foot print, reducing IT support costs), enabling growth (ensuring a highly available, highly scalable infrastructure), increasing employee access & engagement (by having collaboration tools that are usable and available globally regardless of location there will be an increased connectedness amongst teams and individuals that will help increase both efficiency and productivity.)
The vast majority of businesses now use cloud services, yet many still struggle with realizing the full potential of their IT investments. In particular, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) lack the internal IT staff and expertise to fully move to and manage workloads in public cloud environments. Speaker Todd Schwartz will help session attendees better navigate the complex cloud market and maximize their technical investments. The SkyKick co-founder and co-CEO will share the biggest challenges uncovered by the company's [2017 survey](https://offers.skykick.com/top-cloud-challenges) of North American business, sales and IT leaders.
Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history. Unfortunately, there is no single deployment model that solves all of your business goals. You need to maintain the flexibility to deploy in your data center, to multi-clouds, or push to the edge to meet business specific cost, agility or application requirements.
