In what the two companies billed as an "employee town hall," Oracle and Sun
put their respective CEOs on stage January 10 to talk about the companies'
relationship and future directions.
The "town" in this case was Redwood Shores, CA, or, more specifically,
Oracle's Oz-like campus within that city's confines. The "hall" was Oracle's
conference center.
Because the presentation was pitched primarily at employees of Sun and
Oracle, the two chiefs, known for their aggressive stances, were in a jovial,
frequently joking mood. Oracle's Larry Ellison (pictured) came off as the
funnier and more amped up of the two. Sun's Scott McNealy seemed
uncharacteristically subdued, perhaps because he wasn't on his own turf. He
even joked that Sun lacks a capacious venue like Oracle's conference center,
which was why he was in Redwood Shores.

I’ve been to dozens of SOA lectures, presentations and conferences and
though I considered some (the first ones) to be very interesting as I
approached the subject, it soon started to get a bit boring as I easily could
anticipate what the presenters were going to say: why adopt SOA, how will
your company benefit from SOA, the possibilities SOA gives you, etc. etc.
It’s fair to say that there is a lot of confusion and false expertise in
this area and often these conferences are more a PR and sales show rather
than a valid review of what SOA really is.
But why all this fuzz about SOA?
A SOA expert/sales man once said at a seminar:
‘Don’t ask yourself if you need SOA, you already have it!’.
At first I thought it was funny as it sounded more like some kind of
disease... ‘oh crap! when...!? It must have been that Thai stuff...’.
But then he went on saying that SOA is a brand... (more)

The cloud computing meme continues to billow as Juniper and IBM announce a
cloud management partnership rumors swirl about heavy petting between VMware
and shareholder/partner Cisco. A few months ago it seemed like every cloud
discussion included Google and/or Amazon; now it appears that “the network
infrastructure issue” has finally reared its head and ushered in networking
and management leaders into the cloud conversation.
More cloud watchers are discovering that cloud apps -at a minimum- will put
more burdens on the network. As IT services decouple from hardware the
network becomes one of the key chokepoints to the realization of system and
endpoint mobility. System automation will force network automation, or the
evolution of Infrastructure 2.0.
Chokepoints will Drive Innovation

Cisco CEO John Chambers Monday became the latest in a long line of
visionaries to come down from the mountain top with an architectural roadmap
to the Promised Land at an exploitable industry inflection point.
If the purportedly game-changing next-generation platform scheme succeeds,
Chambers will be rich, even more fiendishly rich than he already is, and
Cisco will own not only the data center, but the cloud, the data center's
logical successor, and the computer establishment, as we know it, will be
up-ended.
As prophesied, the widgetry, Cisco's answer to its slowing networking
fortunes and the growth demanded of it by Wall Street, centers on a
newfangled Nehalem-based blade server called the Unified Computing System,
which is all about convergence with networking at its heart.
There's no guarantee it will take off; it's still slideware; and it will take

FREDERICKSBURG, Va., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Who is the world's richest
salesman? And how did he get there? Read the October issue of Selling Power
to find out how Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, grew the software giant to the
pinnacle of success. From the very start of Oracle, Ellison has been the
company's best sales rep, selling the company and its strategy to investors
and to the business world at large.
If you asked Oracle's CEO the dominant theme of his life's story, he might
very well say it was "innovation." But that's only half right. Ellison's
story is as much about salesmanship as it is about innovative software. Even
as CEO, he spends a large percentage of his time in front of Oracle's
customers. He is known as the ultimate closer for Oracle's biggest corporate
deals, a sales role that leverages his unique combination of sales acumen and
personality.
