Fly Two Mistakes High - Keeping High Availability in the Cloud
When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale,
it's important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In
order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures
in other areas of your application.

"Fly two mistakes high" is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby.
It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue
flying with room to still make mistakes.
In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect
and Advocate at New Relic, discussed how this same philosophy can be applied
to highly scaled applications, and can dramatically increase your resilience
to failure.

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real purp... (more)
DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us.
The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days.
We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually
standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people!
My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with
RingCentral on Devops for BigData.
I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why
DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant
colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.
The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile
Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and
tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery
pipeline, from code changes to production updates.
Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)

The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.

DevOps Summit 2015 New York, co-located with the 16th International Cloud
Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY
- announces that it is now accepting Keynote Proposals.
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo will expand the DevOps community, enable a
wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers
alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development
time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support
time generally. Tim... (more)
"Application monitoring and intelligence can smooth the path in a DevOps
environment. In a DevOps environment you see constant change.
If you are trying to monitor things in a constantly changing environment,
you're going to spend a lot of your job fixing your monitoring," explained

at DevOpsSummit, held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in

Ten Myths of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage
technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has
come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions
about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt
this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo
Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing
at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud
computing that still exist today.
Cloud Computing Journal: Why do you think organizations often misunderstand
cloud computing?
Rex Wang: Overall, the understanding of cloud computing has come a long way
over the past few years. Cloud technology is being embraced by a growing
number of organizations each year, while other... (more)

To adapt, IT professionals need to transform their own skillset to become more multi-dimensional by gaining both depth and breadth of a wide variety of knowledge and competencies. Historically, while IT has been built on a foundation of specialty (or "I" shaped) silos, the DevOps principle of "shifting left" is opening up opportunities for developers, operational staff, security and others to grow their skills portfolio, advance their careers and become "T"-shaped.
