Five Reasons to Ditch Email Alerts By @PagerDuty | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Five Reasons to Ditch Email Alerts Want to improve your email alerts? Think again Monitoring systems can help you better manage your uptime, but even though you may spend a lot of time configuring checks and thresholds to identify problems early, your alerts are only as good as your incident response processes. One of the biggest challenges we’ve seen when talking with customers is getting bogged down in email alerts. Despite the increasing disarray of our inboxes, many monitoring systems and IT Operations teams still rely on email for alerting, even though most agree it’s messy and too easy to miss. Looking to improve email alerts? Look again. Here are 5 reasons why you should ditch email alerts if you’re still using them: 1. Email alerts are too easy to miss “Hey did you see this latest cat video my friend emailed to me?” Even if you’re staring at your email inbox ... (more)

Who Are The All-Time Heroes of i-Technology?

I wonder how many people, as I did, found themselves thrown into confusion by the death last week of Jean Ichbiah (pictured), inventor of Ada.  Learning that the inventor of a computer programming language is already old enough to have lived 66 years (Ichbiah was 66 when he succumbed to brain cancer) is a little like learning that your 11-year-old daughter has grown up and left home or that the first car you ever bought no longer is legal because it runs on gasoline in an age where all automobiles must run on water. How can something as novel, as new, as a computing language possibly already be so old-fangled that an early practitioner like Ichbiah can already no longer be with us? The thought was so disquieting that it took me immediately back to the last time I wrote about Ichbiah, and indeed about Ada Lovelace for whom his language was named. It was in the context ... Two Questions for Branding in the Web 2.0 World: Is It Up? Is It Fast?

Keeping your brand alive and well on the Web isn't as easy as it looks. There are few things as important as your reputation, and in the Web 2.0 economy, your reputation is increasingly tied to your web presence. So keeping the website up, available, and responding quickly is critical not only for success, but also for survival. If you think about it, a website's reputation on the Internet can be boiled down to two questions: ‘Is it up?' and ‘Is it fast?' Sure, some websites just make it look easy. Take Google, which is always up and always blazing fast. When was the last time you connected to the Internet, typed in google.com, and nothing came up? While you have the triumph of Google on one side of the coin, you have other sites that are cautionary tales. These days, major site outages make the news. Amazon.com had problems on June 6 of this year, and that outage ... (more)

Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) and Floods Hit the Philippines

I was lucky that Typhoon Ondoy did not affect my apartment. We are out in Pampanga two hours from Manila but we did not have a flood in my little neighborhood. But so many people died in this typhoon, and now the world knows what can happen in the Philippines. We get more than 20 typhoons each year and they cause many problems. Typhoon Feria back there in June damaged many houses in Samar Province where I am from. I was visiting then and it was very scary. You know we don't have a radio there or any way to know when a typhoon is coming. We just hope for the best and we know that no one will help us. Two other typhoons in August and September gave us rain for more than one week. A lot of floods and some people died then, too. But I think that nobody outside of the Philippines knows about these things unless they are very, very bad. As I said, my family and friends ... (more)

Twitter Gets Extreme Makeover

In an announcement made Tuesday at the company HQ of Twitter by its Co-Founder & CEO, Evan Williams (@ev), who bought one of the world's most famous domains for just $7,500, Twitter unveiled a new "faster, better" look. But first the co-founder and CEO Williams gave some background. Twitter - especially mobile Tweeting - was "too difficult," Williams said. Which is why Twitter developed its own mobile apps, so that now 16% of new Twitter users start using Twitter via their mobile devices. Twitter, in Williams' vision - shared by his co-founder Biz Stone (@biz) - is an information network. Ever since he left Blogger eleven years ago he has been trying to make information easier to share, Williams said. In a somewhat meandering presentation, marred by slides that wouldn't work and awkward silences, Williams initially spent a great deal of time explaining, to people who alre... (more)
