Berners-Lee was reportedly selected unanimously out of a field of 78
innovators from 22 countries for "an innovation that directly promotes
people's quality of life, is based on humane values and encourages
sustainable economic development."
They're going to make a fuss over him in Helsinki on June 15 at the inaugural
Millennium Technology Conference on Future Technology. In saluting
Berners-Lee, a Brit ex-pat, the Finns are snubbing one of their own, the
inestimable Linus Torvalds.

I wonder how many people, as I did, found themselves thrown into confusion by
the death last week of Jean Ichbiah (pictured), inventor of Ada.
Learning that the inventor of a computer programming language is already old
enough to have lived 66 years (Ichbiah was 66 when he succumbed to brain
cancer) is a little like learning that your 11-year-old daughter has grown up
and left home or that the first car you ever bought no longer is legal
because it runs on gasoline in an age where all automobiles must run on
water. How can something as novel, as new, as a computing language possibly
already be so old-fangled that an early practitioner like Ichbiah can
already no longer be with us?
The thought was so disquieting that it took me immediately back to the last
time I wrote about Ichbiah, and indeed about Ada Lovelace for whom his
language was named. It was in the context ... (more)

Intel is suing American Guarantee & Liability Insurance Company, a union of
Zurich Financial Services AG, demanding that it pay out on a $50 million
policy and pick up some of the legal bills created by AMD's antitrust suit.
Intel, which says the case may make the record books in terms of the amount
of documents produced, has apparently already burned through $66 million in
policies from two other insurers. AGLI, which has countersued Intel and other
insurance companies, claims Intel didn't provide it with sufficient
information.

Infrastructure 2.0 Session at Virtualization Expo
This week InformationWeek featured my recent infrastructure 2.0 interview
with Alexander Wolfe. As the infrastructure 2.0 Working Group is in stealth
mode, we focused on the high level tech issues resulting from the collision
between virtual and static (physical) infrastructure:
InformationWeek: Let's dive right in. Define the issue, as you see it.
Greg Ness: If you look at networks today, the way they're operated, run, and
configured hasn't really changed for the last several decades. There's a
contrast between today's networks and today's systems. The systems are
getting increasingly automated, while the networks are still very much in
silos. If I were to articulate this in one sentence, I'd say that today's
networks are run like yesterday's businesses.

The machine-to-machine (M2M) movement is having a broad impact across
industries. New business models are being powered by information
distributed to and collected from smart meters in the utilities sector,
connected vehicles in logistics, heart monitors in healthcare, RFID-tagged
inventory in retail and digital signage in the media. M2M creates a vast
“Internet of things” comprised of smart devices that produce data,
networks that transmit data and applications that turn data into real-world
insight.
The M2M paradigm presents an exciting new opportunity for companies to use
Layer 7’s API Management products. APIs represent the key to unlocking
the value of M2M by linking devices in the field to the core enterprise
applications that are able to analyze and apply the data these devices
produce. Layer 7 empowers organizations to make that link in a secure,

In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. “Fly two mistakes high” is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee A... Oct. 14, 2018 09:30 AM EDT | By Pat Romanski Containers and Kubernetes allow for code portability across on-premise VMs, bare metal, or multiple cloud provider environments. Yet, despite this portability promise, developers may include configuration and application definitions that constrain or even eliminate application portability. In this session we'll describe best practices for "configuration as code" in a Kubernetes environment. We will demonstrate how a properly constructed containerized app can be deployed to both Amazon and Azure ... Aug. 25, 2018 10:00 AM EDT Reads: 2,486 | By Liz McMillan Modern software design has fundamentally changed how we manage applications, causing many to turn to containers as the new virtual machine for resource management. As container adoption grows beyond stateless applications to stateful workloads, the need for persistent storage is foundational - something customers routinely cite as a top pain point.
