CapEx, OpEx, and Scale

I have written in recent weeks that most networking purchases are dominated by what I call the Year One Problem. That is to say that networks need to continuously add capacity at ever-increasing rates while budgets remain flat to slightly up (if you are lucky). This creates a dynamic where the only criterion that matters in any individual purchasing decision is the price-per-usable-capacity. Not unsurprisingly, we have seen a wave of white box fever rush over our industry. But sitting just over the horizon is the Year Three Problem. The fact that operating expense dominates total cost over the life of a device is not lost on anyone. Those CIOs, VPs, and Lead Architects who want to maintain their job security for years to come have to solve the Year One Problem while simultaneously extracting operating expense out of the network. This brings workflow automation into... (more)

LineRate: Some of UR Code Are Belong to the Network

#devops #NodeSummit #nodejs #F5 is putting the power of node.js in the network API versioning. API metering. URI rewriting. Cookie management. A/B testing. Canary deployments. API façades. Traditionally these tasks have been implemented through a variety of hacks and manual configuration in web server or proxy conf files. URI rewriting? Write some regular expressions in Apache and restart the process. Decisions on routing - do I send Bob to the beta version or the release version? - or authentication requiring database access?  Hard-code it in the application and use performance-killing redirects and consume valuable application resources. Want to use memcached to improve performance and scale? Hard-code it in the application.  Domain logic doesn't belong in the application, or in the data access API. It belongs in an app proxy along with load balancing, SSL termin... (more)

Disaster Recovery Download: Looking Ahead to IT Continuity Trends in 2014

It’s exciting to look back at the end of every year in the IT industry to see how far we’ve come. In 2013 we saw the meteoric rise of SDN/NFV, the continued hype around big data and even more conversations circulating about virtualization and the cloud. With all these buzz words filling the air, where does IT business continuity fit in? In 2013, businesses came to terms with the necessity of an effective disaster recovery strategy. Many made the move from simple backup and tape solutions to more flexible and cost effective cloud-based technologies. While there were improvements, there were also failures. The overall cost of downtime continues to increase and businesses, both small and large, saw outages that affected thousands of users and billions in lost revenue. In today’s Disaster Recovery Download we highlight articles that look back at the industry movements in... (more)

5 things Arista’s impending IPO says about networking

Networking seems to be an industry that thrives on anticipation. At various times, the anticipation bounces between topics (when SDN will hit production environments, when Cisco would spin in Insieme, and so on), but the entire space seems to bounce around from anticipated event to anticipated event. It would seem that the next one in the queue is Arista’s IPO. On the surface, Arista’s public offering is primarily about raising funds and rewarding people who have worked hard to build a successful company over the past several years. But what else does it say about the networking industry at large? Networking is not dead When the Internet was created, networking was huge. The companies that provided the gear to make the Internet work were handsomely rewarded for figuring out how to push bits from here to there. Over the past 15 years, however, a lot of the luster has... (more)

Pica8 Executive Tells Forum that SDN is Ready to Solve Real-World Problems Today

At a forum held today for institutional investors, private company executives and technologists, Steve Garrison, vice president of product marketing at Pica8, told attendees that he believes large data center organizations should consider the company’s approach to Open Networking right now to solve their most pressing data center challenges despite their belief that Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a disruptive technology and not ready for production environments. Speaking at the Emerging Technology Summit hosted by Pacific Crest Securities in San Francisco, Garrison initially defined and described how Open Networking decouples hardware from the switching operating system, which helps data center environments to leverage the benefits of commoditized hardware, which reduces capital expenses (CapEx). He then told attendees how that customization and programmabili... (more)

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It’s clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in ...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
