In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

The good news about the Big Data market is that we generally all agree on the
definition of Big Data, which has come to be known as data that has volume,
velocity and variety where businesses need to collect, store, manage and
analyze in order to derive business value or otherwise known as the "4 V's."
However, the problem with such a broad definition is that it can mean
different things to different people once you start to put some real values
next to those V's.
Let's be honest, Volume can be a different thing to different organizations.
To some it is anything above 10 terabytes of managed data in their BI
environment and to others it is petabyte scale and nothing less. Likewise
velocity can be multi-billions of daily records coming into the enterprise
from various external and internal networks. When it really comes down to it,
each business situation will be qu... (more)
Since its emergence, Web Service technology has gone a long way towards
perfecting itself and finding its right application in the real world. With
the maturity of the specifications, Web Service technology, with its power of
interoperability, is now the major enabling technology of SOA, which is being
adopted by more and more enterprises to build their application integration
infrastructure.
Developing Web Services involves a variety of technologies, XML processing,
SOAP, and WSDL, to name a few. Luckily, there are frameworks that target
handling theses kinds of middleware functions, freeing up developers to focus
on the business logic.
Nowadays, many Web Service frameworks exist for all kinds of programming
languages. Some of them are open source, others are commercially available.
Some examples of such frameworks are Apache Axis and Axis2, WS02 Web Services

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and
virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two
technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of
research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the
2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP).
"CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing
legacy requirements," McDonald continued, noting that "Cloud services and
virtualization are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar
service levels at lower budget costs."
The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to
December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time.
According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster
than originally expected. Cur... (more)

"Enterprises everywhere are realizing the inherent benefits of running their
core IT services in the cloud,” said Todd McKinnon, most recently VP of
Engineering at Salesforce.com from 2003 to 2009, and now CEO of the on-demand
identity and access management service, Okta.
"This shift fundamentally requires them to rethink their IT infrastructure
and how their employees access it," McKinnon added. "Okta," he continued, "is
the only enterprise class, on-demand service purpose built to help customer
secure and manage their entire cloud services network and the people who need
access to it, with no professional services required."
McKinnon was commenting on the day that he and his team launched a new
on-demand service to accelerate the secure adoption of Cloud Apps.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories By Pat Romanski The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded.
