To the President of Syria, Mr. and Mrs. Bashar al-Assad
Mr. and Mrs. President Bashar al-Assad:
At the tender age of 17 months my severely ill daughter Sofia, an American
citizen, was abducted by her mother on Monday, July 26, in Istanbul, Turkey,
and taken to Syria.
Fox News: ▸ video ▸ story
I was informed yesterday by Sofia's mother that she will not be coming back
to the United States nor will she allow Sofia to return home.
Sofia has been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that requires
immediate treatment in the United States. It was scheduled to start on July
27, 2010, in New Jersey, the day after her abduction and was supposed to last
until she reaches the age of 3.
Any delay in the urgently needed treatment will result in a life-long
disability for Sofia and make her dependent for the whole of her a... (more)

Ximian has released an upgrade to its Red Carpet desktop client software,
which lets users download and update Linux software from Ximian and other
vendors.
Highlights of Red Carpet 2.0 include a streamlined user interface, new
functionality for finding installed packages and recording one's installation
history and the ability to manage software on systems other than one's own.
Version 2.0 includes a Red Carpet Daemon that integrates installed machines
into a larger Linux software management group.
The daemon, which runs in the background, is supposed to scan the Linux
applications and packages installed on a system, automatically resolve
software dependencies and detect conflicts when a user is installing new
software using the Red Carpet graphical client interface. The integration is
designed to let administrators perform remote updates using Red Carpet on any

The SCO Group, which overnight became the most loathed company in the
business because of its IBM suit, displacing Microsoft, the titleholder, from
its place, at least for the moment, sent the following letter to its customer
base on St. Patrick's Day:
Dear Valued SCO Customer:
SCO appreciates the business relationship that we have enjoyed with you in
the past and we look forward to being your business partner in the future.
Traditionally, one element of this strong partnership has been a consistent
line of communication regarding SCO's business offerings and strategies.
Many of you have undoubtedly read about SCO's recently announced lawsuit
against IBM. Although we are legally constrained regarding many details of
this action, we would like to provide you with some background information
that will help you to understand our position on this matter.

Intel has been quietly delivering the next rev of its Xeon DP chip to such as
Dell and HP who are already peddling workstations based on the unannounced
processor.
The 3.06GHz widget, which pulls the Xeon line's clock into synch with the
desktop Pentium 4, whose core it shares, is supposed to launch in, oh, say,
early March.
The best AMD can currently do is a 2.133GHz Athlon MP that's supposed to
perform better than a 2.6GHz Intel chip in certain applications. By the end
of April AMD should have launched its hybrid x86-64 Hammer architecture in
two-way servers at least.
The next Xeon DP up is the so-called Nocona, built on Intel's prospective
90nm process and due in the fourth quarter. Nocona is supposed to double the
DP's on-board cache to 1MB. Its clock should be better than 3 gigs, but how
much better is still unclear.

(July 11, 2003) - “Users face more art than science when trying to build a
quantifiable Unix/Intel-to-Linux/mainframe business case. Increasingly
sophisticated modeling of prospective mainframe Linux-base consolidation can
quickly confirm or deny potential value. At best, users should view mainframe
Linux consolidation as a short-term, interim step to the natural long-term
economics of Linux-on-Intel (“Lintel”).

CloudEXPO Stories By Elizabeth White Using new techniques of information modeling, indexing, and processing, new cloud-based systems can support cloud-based workloads previously not possible for high-throughput insurance, banking, and case-based applications. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, John Newton, CTO, Founder and Chairman of Alfresco, described how to scale cloud-based content management repositories to store, manage, and retrieve billions of documents and related information with fast and linear scalability.
He addressed the challenges of scaling document repositories to this level; architectural approaches for coordinating data; search and storage technologies, Solr, and Amazon storage and database technologies; the breadth of use cases that modern content systems need to support; how to support user applications that require subsecond response times. Jul. 4, 2018 04:45 PM EDT Reads: 4,336 | By Pat Romanski Cloud is the motor for innovation and digital transformation. CIOs will run 25% of total application workloads in the cloud by the end of 2018, based on recent Morgan Stanley report. Having the right enterprise cloud strategy in place, often in a multi cloud environment, also helps companies become a more intelligent business. Companies that master this path have something in common: they create a culture of continuous innovation.
In his presentation, Dilipkumar will outline the latest research and steps companies can take to make innovation a daily work habit by using enterprise cloud computing. I will share examples from companies that have benefited from enterprise cloud computing and take a look into the future of how the cloud helps companies become a more intelligent business. Jul. 4, 2018 12:00 PM EDT | By Pat Romanski The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully been able to harness the excess capacity of privately owned vehicles and turned into a meaningful business. This concept can be step-functioned to harnessing the spare compute capacity of smartphones that can be orchestrated by MEC to provide cloud service at the edge. Jul. 4, 2018 10:00 AM EDT | By Elizabeth White Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle.
In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Alex Lovell-Troy, Director of Solutions Engineering at Pythian, presented a roadmap that can be leveraged by any organization to plan, analyze, evaluate, and execute on moving from configuration management tools to cloud orchestration tools. He also addressed the three major cloud vendors as well as some tools that will work with any cloud. Jul. 3, 2018 10:45 PM EDT Reads: 9,977 |
