Monitoring and Observability
By Dawn Parzych
Defining the term ‘monitoring’ is a difficult task considering the
performance space has evolved significantly over the years. Lately, there
has been a shift in the monitoring world, sparking a healthy debate regarding
the definition and purpose of monitoring, through which a new term has
emerged: observability. Some of that debate can be found in blogs
by Charity Majors and Cindy Sridharan.
Many organizations like AirBnB, Twitter, and Stripe are embracing the
observability by creating observability teams or observability engineers.
So what is the difference between monitoring and observability, and how
are they related? Is monitoring a subset of observability, is observability
a subset of monitoring, or are they two terms that mean the same thing?
Performance monitoring is an umbrella term that can include system

How to Win Over DevOps Holdouts
By Tim Buntel
It’s “time to move on from DevOps and continuous delivery.”
This was the provocative title of a recent article in ZDNet, in which Kelsey
Hightower, staff developer advocate at Google Cloud Platform, suggested that
“software shops should have put these concepts into action years ago.”
Reading articles like this or listening to talks at most DevOps conferences
might make you think that we’re entering a post-DevOps world. But vast
numbers of organizations still struggle to start and drive transformational
changes. In fact, it’s incredibly common for software development projects
to be late, to be built with poor quality, and to fail to meet the needs of
users. Despite all the evidence that we should be doing DevOps, we can’t.
What’s Holding Up DevOps?
What’s keeping so many organizations from a full DevOps transformation?

At last we have reached the end! it’s been 31 straight days of what I
hope you have found to be useful information; all about using Windows Azure
as an Infrastructure-as-a-Service option for testing, training, and extending
your datacenter.
If you’ve missed any, I highly recommend you look at and bookmark the “31
Days of Servers in the Cloud” page: http://aka.ms/AzureCloudSeries.
But what about authentication? If I’m building a hybrid-cloud – which,
in case you’re not familiar with it, is a company’s private cloud that
spans beyond and into the public cloud domain – then how do I architect a
solid solution for identity management, authentication, and authorization for
my applications, services, and data?
Today, Ira Bell (via my friend Bob Hunt) describes in great detail several
scenarios (six of them!) for authentication and access using Windows Azure.

I spent the last four days in Nashville, TN for the Fusion13 Service
Management conference, and, as I always am at events like these, I was
impressed with the energy and excitement around ITSM.
Beyond the workshops and keynote presentations, the Expo Hall was packed with
attendees, all of whom were eager to discuss the future of IT service
management. Perhaps most telling, though, was the strong presence of cloud
solutions at the event. The theme of cloud ITSM ran throughout the conference
– with mentions in workshops and keynotes and cloud vendors in the Expo
Hall – underscoring the fact that ITSM is really heading full force into
the cloud.
Speaking with other attendees, I discovered that they also noticed the
abundance of “cloud talk” at Fusion and were particularly interested in
discussions around the reliability of the cloud and the SaaS cloud model. And
