RIA Opinion: Is "Rich Internet Application" Too Broad a Term?

Cleve Gibbon's "Java Soup" Blog Which of the following are RIAs: Google Earth, Gmail, Picnik, iTunes? "RIA" is too broad term and trying to stuff all this types of application into that bucket. I think discussing the terms will deliver much more value. What do you think an RIA is? Do we need another term? What do you think an RIA is? Which of the following are RIAs: Google Earth Gmail Picnik iTunes Take a couple of seconds to think about that and then read David Herron’s Thoughts on Rich Internet Applications. Now go back and classify the above applications. Now think about these new types of web application that can you tear off from the web browser and place on your desktop and for them to continue working. At that point I realised that RIA is too broad term and trying to stuff all this types of application into that bucket is only fuelling the confusion. But do we ... (more)

Eucalyptus, CloudStack, OpenStack & OpenNebula: A Tale of Two Cloud Models

Over the last five years, since the release of the first open-source version of OpenNebula in March 2008, we have been involved in many presentations, discussions and meetings where people wanted to know how OpenNebula compares with the rest of open-source Cloud Management Platforms (CMPs), mostly with Eucalyptus and OpenStack. The most common understanding is that all CMPs are competing in the same market, trying to fill the same gap. Consequently, people jump to the wrong conclusion that after years of a fierce competition, there will only be one winner, a single open-source CMP in the market. However, as discussed by Joe Brockmeier in his post "It's Not Highlander, There Can Be More Than One Open Source Cloud", there is room in the market for several open-source CMPs that, addressing different cloud niches, will fit together into a broad open cloud ecosystem. Study: Everyone Hates the iPhone 5 and Everyone Loves the Galaxy SIV

Apple’s iPhone 5 might be the best-selling smartphone in the world, but a new study suggests it is also the “most hated.” The Daily Mail points us to a study conducted by U.K.-based social media agency We Are Social that analyzed chatter on Twitter, blogs and forums following the launches of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, Lumia 920 and BlackBerry Z10. After tracking the responses and comparing each of the four devices, the firm found that 20% of the posts discussing the iPhone 5 were complaints. This compares to 18% of posts that complained about the BlackBerry Z10 and 15% that griped about Nokia’s Lumia 920. Just 11% of posts covering the Galaxy S4 were complaints, leading We Are Social to conclude that Samsung’s flagship phone is the “most loved” handset on the market. CloudEXPO Stories
Cloud is the motor for innovation and digital transformation. CIOs will run 25% of total application workloads in the cloud by the end of 2018, based on recent Morgan Stanley report. Having the right enterprise cloud strategy in place, often in a multi cloud environment, also helps companies become a more intelligent business. Companies that master this path have something in common: they create a culture of continuous innovation. In his presentation, Dilipkumar will outline the latest research and steps companies can take to make innovation a daily work habit by using enterprise cloud computing. I will share examples from companies that have benefited from enterprise cloud computing and take a look into the future of how the cloud helps companies become a more intelligent business.
Traditional on-premises data centers have long been the domain of modern data platforms like Apache Hadoop, meaning companies who build their business on public cloud were challenged to run Big Data processing and analytics at scale. But recent advancements in Hadoop performance, security, and most importantly cloud-native integrations, are giving organizations the ability to truly gain value from all their data. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, David Tishgart, Director of Product Marketing at Cloudera, covered the ins and outs of Hadoop, and how it can help cloud-based businesses.

"The track has been designed in experience/degree order," said Schmarzo. Bill Schmarzo, author of "Big Data: Understanding How Data Powers Big Business" and "Big Data MBA: Driving Business Strategies with Data Science" is responsible for guiding the technology strategy within Hitachi Vantara for IoT and Analytics. For years the world's most security-focused and distributed organizations - banks, military/defense agencies, global enterprises - have sought to adopt cloud technologies that can reduce costs, future-proof against data growth, and improve user productivity. The challenges of cloud transformation for these kinds of secure organizations have centered around data security, migration from legacy systems, and performance. In our presentation, we will discuss the notion that cloud computing, properly managed, is poised to bring about a digital transformation to enterprise IT. We will discuss the trend, the technology and the timeline for adoption.
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully been able to harness the excess capacity of privately owned vehicles and turned into a meaningful business. This concept can be step-functioned to harnessing the spare compute capacity of smartphones that can be orchestrated by MEC to provide cloud service at the edge.
