Two years ago Rod Smith (pictured), IBM Software's VP of Emerging
Technologies (and still with IBM today), wrote an open letter to Rob Gingell,
Sun's Chief Engineer (now with Cassatt). IBM, Smith said, 'would like to work
with Sun on an independent project to open source Java.'
Here is the open letter in full:
"Hi Rob,
This is an open letter to Sun.
I read a February 5th article, in which Simon Phipps was quoted on open
source Java, with quite a bit of interest.
If you don't have the article, it is available here.
In the article, Simon asked, "Why hasn't IBM given its implementation of Java
to the open-source community?" I'm sure you recall the discussion we had over
dinner in December around open sourcing Java. Simon's comment appears to be
an offer to jointly work toward this common goal. IBM is a strong supporter
of the open source community, and we believe that a ... (more)

My recent switch to a single-boot Ubuntu setup on my Thinkpad T60 simply
floors me on a regular basis. Most recently it's had to do with the
experience of maintaining the software. Fresh from a very long Windows 2000
experience and a four-month Windows XP experience along with a long-time
Linux sys admin role puts me in a great position to assess Ubuntu. Three
prior attempts over the years at using Linux as my daily desktop OS had me
primed for failure. Well, Ubuntu takes Linux where I've long hoped it would
go - easy to use, reliable, dependable, great applications too but more on
that later. It has some elegance to it - bet you never heard that about a
Linux desktop before.
There are many night-and-day differences between Windows and Ubuntu and, for
a guy that does 80% standard office tasks and the rest of the time I'm doing
Linux admin tasks, it was nearly all i... (more)
In an open letter to the OS community, Darl McBride writes: 'The most

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?

2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to

A source claiming to be in the know says that the SCO Group is going to sue
Google for not paying its Linux taxes.
Last week SCO threatened to make an example of a big-time Linux user that
hadn't paid SCO the license fees it's demanding and take it to court for
copyright infringement.
SCO has not disclosed the identity of its mark and SCO CEO Darl McBride
claimed Tuesday that a decision on what company to target wasn't final yet.
He said SCO and its lawyers were working with "a short list" of "seven or
eight" names.
McBride declined to say whether Google's name was on it, but another
knowledgeable source said it was.
SCO said last week that it would sue within 90 days. The Linux community
thinks SCO's bluffing and won't make its self-imposed February 17 deadline.
McBride said he'd like to play that number in Vegas.
The idea behind the suit is obviously to make all m... (more)
