In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

The virtualization "waves" are just forming. And while server virtualization
is at full crest, there are many more waves behind this that are taking shape
and quite frankly, are more significant.
Server virtualization was about saving money. Allowing multiple applications
to be consolidated onto a single server saves capital and operational
expenses. Reducing the number of servers running in the data center is a good
thing, as it also saves some carbon emissions as well. But is that it? If so,
that’s more like a ripple than a wave. Don’t get me wrong, reducing
power, cooling, server count and consolidating apps is a good thing, but it's
not the whole story. Not by a long shot.
I don’t believe that this is it. In fact, I think we are still in the
beginning stages of realizing what virtualization can do. It’s really the
enabling technology that fuels ... (more)

Referring to Cloud Computing, Citrix CEO Mark Templeton has said that
"Customers need the time to get comfortable with it and all that's different
from the proprietary model, and the industry needs time to make it
consumable." Templeton was speaking to a reporter at the Citrix iForum 2008
in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Templeton, 55, is President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director for
Citrix, a $1.4 billion leader in application delivery infrastructure
operating in over 100 countries.
He joined Citrix as Vice President of Marketing in 1995, when Citrix had $95
million in revenue and went public. He has served as President since
January 1998 and as Chief Executive Officer from June 2001 to the present.
Under Templeton’s leadership, Citrix has become one of the world’s top
technology companies. In the 1990s, he wa... (more)
'Virtualization is one of the most interesting IT topics these days,' says
Roland Wartenberg, SAP's Director of Virtualization.
'Whereas one can find a lot of concepts and high level content provided by
various vendors, it's sometimes a challenge to find detailed technical
information on how to use it in SAP landscapes,' he adds.
Wartenberg will be putting that right at SYS-CON's 4th International
Virtualization Conference & Expo in San Jose, CA, this week, where he will be
giving a technical breakout session in a speaker lineup that includes some of
the best known virtualization executives in the entire IT industry.
Wartenberg joins a heavy-hitting Speaker Faculty due to speak in three
parallel tracks during the event, which is being held at The Fairmont Hotel,
San Jose.

The Democrats had their convention, followed by the Republicans. As VMware
gets ready for its own convention, Microsoft has rained on their parade by
holding its 'Get Virtual Now' Virtualization party one week ahead of
VMware's. I am looking at the news headlines this morning and all I see is
that every possible Virtualization company, large and small, is rushing to
declare its tools are either ready or will be ready very soon to play in
Microsoft's Virtualization Olympics.
This week I declare the end of VMware, gloom and doom. History repeats itself
on many occasions and this is the movie "Netscape Part Two" for all practical
purposes.
VMware, however, saw this coming a long time ago - the day when its stock
crashed and the day its CEO was replaced by a Microsoft warrior. Too little,
too late.
If I were in the board room at VMware, my first item on the agenda to disc... (more)
Virtualization is quickly becoming an important technology across all parts
of the IT environment. The technology is rapidly being deployed in server,
storage, networking, as well as client environments.
The theme of SYS-CON's Virtualization Conference Europe 2009, to be held in
Prague, Czech Republic, on May 18-19, 2009, is 'Deploying Virtualization in
the Enterprise' and the Call for Papers (Submissions Deadline March 15),
welcomes submissions from exceptional speakers with high-quality use cases
not only of how virtualization maximizes the use of resources and thus saves
companies money, but also of how it is fundamentally altering the way that
businesses run IT throughout Europe and indeed the world.
Virtualization is becoming an increasingly important concept, not only to IT
staffs, but to CIOs and line-of-business managers as well. Virtualization
technologies ar... (more)
We have just announced the availability of OpenNebula 1.2, the second stable
release of the project. This is an important milestone for the project and
marks that most of the components of OpenNebula are now in place. See this
post with the details of the first release.
What is OpenNebula?
The OpenNebula virtual infrastructure engine provides efficient, dynamic and
scalable management of groups of interconnected VMs within datacenters
involving a large amount of virtual and physical servers. OpenNebula supports
Xen and KVM platforms and can interface with remote cloud sites, being the
only tool able to access on-demand to Amazon EC2 to dynamically scale the
local infrastructure based on actual usage. OpenNebula also exhibits an open
and flexible architecture which allows the definition of new algorithms for
virtual machine placement, and its integration with any virt... (more)

I had the privilege of serving on the Board of the Peter Drucker Foundation
(now the Leader to Leader Institute) for ten years. Peter was a pioneer in
understanding the impact of knowledge workers in the new economy. He simply
defined knowledge workers as ‘people who know more about what they are
doing than their boss does’. In a world where knowledge workers are the key
to value in most corporations, personal brand management becomes critically
important. Professionals at all levels will need to be able to communicate
their unique brand within and across organizations – and be able to
communicate effectively to decision makers who may not have their level of
technical expertise. One of the great ironies that I regularly encounter in
the workforce, is the fact that many technically trained professionals have
spent years ‘honing their craft’ and... (more)
