I do not think anyone mentioned the obvious infeasibility of systems
with limited resources in terms of processor capacity, memory, I/O
availability as well as working in potentially hostile environments
(e.g., no cooling possible, satellites). I partly work with wireless
sensor networks where the nodes we work with have 8 bit processors and 4
kB of memory (we also have nodes with more capacity, but they require
more battery power). We are considering using XML, BUT the scarceness of
resources as well as limited battery power makes the overhead of using
XML to great. We are considering the efficient XML (binary XML), since
sending and receiving messages is more costly than running a number of
clocks cycles/instructions to compress the message.

BTW, looking at sales figures, 99% of all sold processors are for
embedded systems and 1% is for servers, desktop applications, high end
computing etc (see, for example,
http://www.ercim.org/publication/Ercim_News/enw52/budde.html). Most of
these embedded systems processors are at most 8 bit processors.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
If a machine can invent, does this mean the end of the patent system as we know it? The patent system, both in the US and Europe, allows companies to protect their inventions and helps foster innovation. However, Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be set to disrupt the patent system as we know it. This talk will examine how AI may change the patent landscape in the years to come. Furthermore, ways in which companies can best protect their AI related inventions will be examined from both a US and...
Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost advantages. What is less apparent is how incumbent enterprises operating at scale have, following success with IoT, built analytic, operations management and software development capabilities - ranging from autonomous vehicles to manageable robotics installations. They have embraced these capabilities as if they were Silicon Valley startups.
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform and how we integrate our thinking to solve complicated problems. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Craig Sproule, CEO of Metavine, demonstrated how to move beyond today's coding paradigm and sh...

The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...
