On Tuesday Nokia, the cell phone biggie, released a version of its mobile Java tool kit called the Developer’s Suite for Java 2 Micro Edition 1.1 for Linux, hoping to expand the universe of folks writing mobile applications. The stuff was previously available only on Windows. The suite is obviously aimed at providing developers with tools to build, test and deploy downloadable applications for J2ME, a version of Java for small consumer electronic devices. It is supposed to support development of Mobile Information Device (MID) Profile applications, a collection of APIs for cell phones and other wireless devices that runs on top of J2ME and enables developers to create personalized interactive services for them. Along with the Linux port, Nokia has also enhanced the suite. The upgrade provides an audio converter that translates MIDI files into Nokia ring tone files o... (more)

SnapGear First to Productize 2.6 Kernel

SnapGear Inc, the embedded Linux security house, has released what it believes is the first production system using the new still "unreleased" 2.6 kernel. It's part of SnapGear Embedded Linux 3.0, a full embedded Linux distribution with encryption enhancements and a developer's toolkit. Snapgear's old specialized embedded uClinux kernel, which ran on chips from Intel, Motorola and Renesas, the Hitachi-Mitsubishi joint venture, and reportedly runs on some two million devices, was merged into the 2.6 kernel during the 2.5 development process. Andrew Morton, the head 2.6 maintainer, said that although most of the 2.5/2.6 enhancements focused on scaling Linux up to very large systems, thanks to SnapGear's engineering work and contributions to the 2.5/2.6 kernel "means the new kernel scales further down than ever before so the latest kernel will run out-of-the-box on sma... Lindows Makes Apps Push

Lindows.com has now concocted a LindowsDeveloper Edition that it says is designed specifically for software developers and includes a hundred-odd development tools built in. It's meant to jumpstart a larger desktop Lindows software library and appeal to the small and mid-sized developer who wants to sell his programs to the Lindows installed base. The software can supposedly be used to port existing programs as well as write new stuff. Lindows has come up with a no-cost Publish Program to help both open source and commercial developers distribute their programs. Open source programs will be free to any (paid) members of Lindows' Click-N-Run warehouse while commercial programs would be sold through Click-N-Run. Terms of such arrangements were not disclosed and doubtless vary. ... (more)

You Could Call It Skimmer or Bowler or, Hey, How about Cloche

Researchers at Cornell University, a Microsoft sympathizer, says they're going to protest Red Hat's intentions to trademark Fedora, the name given to the open source project that's replacing Red Hat's free and retailer distributions. The Cornell team, which used the acronym to stand for Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture, feels it has dibs on the name going back to 1997. Red Hat applied for a trademark in September and is already treating it as a given. Cornell has never trademarked it. ... (more)

Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost advantages. What is less apparent is how incumbent enterprises operating at scale have, following success with IoT, built analytic, operations management and software development capabilities - ranging from autonomous vehicles to manageable robotics installations. They have embraced these capabilities as if they were Silicon Valley startups.
As IoT continues to increase momentum, so does the associated risk. Secure Device Lifecycle Management (DLM) is ranked as one of the most important technology areas of IoT. Driving this trend is the realization that secure support for IoT devices provides companies the ability to deliver high-quality, reliable, secure offerings faster, create new revenue streams, and reduce support costs, all while building a competitive advantage in their markets. In this session, we will use customer use cases...
