Understanding #Serverless at @CloudExpo | #DevOps #NoCode #LowCode #AI

Understanding Serverless Cloud and Clear By Martijn van Dongen Serverless is considered the successor to containers. And while it’s heavily promoted as the next great thing, it’s not the best fit for every use case. Understanding the pitfalls and disadvantages of serverless will make it much easier to identify use cases that are a good fit. This post offers some technology perspectives on the maturity of serverless today. First, note how we use the word serverless here. Serverless is a combination of “Function as a Service” (FaaS) and “Platform as a Service” (PaaS). Namely, those categories of cloud services where you don’t know what the servers look like. For example, RDS or Beanstalk are “servers managed by AWS,” where you still see the context of server(s). DynamoDB and S3 are just some kind of NoSQL and storage solution with an API, where you do not see the ser... (more)

API and DX Keynote By @Sandy_Carter | @ExpoDX #AI #IoT #IIoT #API #SmartCities #DigitalTransformation

From CloudEXPO TV Archives: Growth hacking is common for startups to make unheard-of progress in building their business. Career Hacks can help Geek Girls and those who support them (yes, that's you too, Dad!) to excel in this typically male-dominated world. Get ready to learn the facts: Is there a bias against women in the tech / developer communities? Why are women 50% of the workforce, but hold only 24% of the STEM or IT positions? Some beginnings of what to do about it! In her Day 2 Keynote at 17th Cloud Expo, Sandy Carter, IBM General Manager Cloud Ecosystem and Developers, and a Social Business Evangelist, discussed why this matters, how innovation will benefit, and how to foster an interest in tech. Learn why women need to take risks and embrace failure to give them the courage to crash through the glass ceiling. Sandy will share some of her own experiences... (more)

High Availability in Cloud | @CloudEXPO @NewRelic @LeeAtchison #DevOps

Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Fly Two Mistakes High - Keeping High Availability in the Cloud When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale, it's important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here "Fly two mistakes high" is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect and Advocate at New Relic, discussed how this same philosophy can be applied to highly scaled applications, and can dramatically increase your resilience to failure. I’m Not Scared of #DevOps | @DevOpsSummit #APM #CD #Docker #Monitoring

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project. Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a misunderstanding around Operations real purp... How #Microservices Extend #DevOps | @DevOpsSummit #AI #APM #Serverless

Lori MacVittie with @DevOpsSummit conference chair Andi Mann before delivering her session at Cloud Expo New York Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that's changing with microservices architectures. Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here In her session at DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks, focused on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro) services and why that means an expansion into "the network" for DevOps. Speaker Bio Lori MacVittie is responsible for education and evangelism of application services available across F5's entire product suite. Her role includes authorship of technical materials and participation in a number ... (more)

DevOps Summit Was a Terrific Event! | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #BigData #IoT #Microservices

DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us. The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days. We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people! My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with RingCentral on Devops for BigData. I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of. The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery pipeline, from code changes to production updates. Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)

Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Alex Lovell-Troy, Director of Solutions Engineering at Pythian, presented a roadmap that can be leveraged by any organization to plan, analyze, evaluate, and execute on moving from configuration management tools to cloud orchestration tools. He also addressed the three major cloud vendors as well as some tools that will work with any cloud.
Serveless Architectures brings the ability to independently scale, deploy and heal based on workloads and move away from monolithic designs. From the front-end, middle-ware and back-end layers, serverless workloads potentially have a larger security risk surface due to the many moving pieces. This talk will focus on key areas to consider for securing end to end, from dev to prod. We will discuss patterns for end to end TLS, session management, scaling to absorb attacks and mitigation techniques.
CI/CD is conceptually straightforward, yet often technically intricate to implement since it requires time and opportunities to develop intimate understanding on not only DevOps processes and operations, but likely product integrations with multiple platforms. This session intends to bridge the gap by offering an intense learning experience while witnessing the processes and operations to build from zero to a simple, yet functional CI/CD pipeline integrated with Jenkins, Github, Docker and Azure.
"We do one of the best file systems in the world. We learned how to deal with Big Data many years ago and we implemented this knowledge into our software," explained Jakub Ratajczak, Business Development Manager at MooseFS, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
