My recent switch to a single-boot Ubuntu setup on my Thinkpad T60 simply
floors me on a regular basis. Most recently it's had to do with the
experience of maintaining the software. Fresh from a very long Windows 2000
experience and a four-month Windows XP experience along with a long-time
Linux sys admin role puts me in a great position to assess Ubuntu. Three
prior attempts over the years at using Linux as my daily desktop OS had me
primed for failure. Well, Ubuntu takes Linux where I've long hoped it would
go - easy to use, reliable, dependable, great applications too but more on
that later. It has some elegance to it - bet you never heard that about a
Linux desktop before.
There are many night-and-day differences between Windows and Ubuntu and, for
a guy that does 80% standard office tasks and the rest of the time I'm doing
Linux admin tasks, it was nearly all i... (more)
In an open letter to the OS community, Darl McBride writes: 'The most

ongoing battle over software copyrights and intellectual property. This
battle is being fought largely between vendors who create and sell

Group, became a focus of this controversy when we filed a lawsuit against IBM
alleging that SCO's proprietary Unix code has been illegally copied into the

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?

1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the

2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to

A source claiming to be in the know says that the SCO Group is going to sue
Google for not paying its Linux taxes.
Last week SCO threatened to make an example of a big-time Linux user that
hadn't paid SCO the license fees it's demanding and take it to court for
copyright infringement.
SCO has not disclosed the identity of its mark and SCO CEO Darl McBride
claimed Tuesday that a decision on what company to target wasn't final yet.
He said SCO and its lawyers were working with "a short list" of "seven or
eight" names.
McBride declined to say whether Google's name was on it, but another
knowledgeable source said it was.
SCO said last week that it would sue within 90 days. The Linux community
thinks SCO's bluffing and won't make its self-imposed February 17 deadline.
McBride said he'd like to play that number in Vegas.
The idea behind the suit is obviously to make all m... (more)

Nat Torkington raised this week the very real question of whether the term
"open source" is now completely meaningless, in the sense that its meaning
has now been sucked out of it by companies that purport to be open source yet
don't allow users to freely download, compile, and use the software in
question. One example Torkington cites is SugarCRM, whose license he
describes as "a questionably modified OSI-approved license.
But Sam Minee of SilverStripe didn't agree with Torkington, and argued that,
in order to describe itself as an "open source" company, all it need to be is
"a company that will help you make the switch to open source in your
company."
So where is the dividing line? How "open" is open? And is "open source" as a
term dead or dying?
Enterprise Open Source Magazine contacted a wide range of FOSS luminaries
for their "take." Here is what they had to sa... (more)

SCO CEO Darl McBride, the most hated man in the computer industry, says he's
reached for an analogy to describe SCO's experience since suing IBM. "This is

to conclude, "Nothing...Nothing compares to what's happened in the last
year."
What happened in the last few days proves his point.
BayStar, the venture capital outfit that wants its money back from SCO - a
highly uniquely situation even for the computer business - has suddenly and
out of the blue doubled its position in the company.

Machine learning algorithms can better anticipate data storms and automate resources to support surges, including fully scalable GPU-c... May. 16, 2018 02:15 PM EDT | By Yeshim Deniz Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ... May. 16, 2018 01:15 PM EDT | By Liz McMillan The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...
