As I write this, the stock price of Google, Inc. just exceeded $500 for the first time in the company's still-brief (two-year) history as a public company. That gives the search colossus a market cap of $150 billion, many times in excess of its physical assets - currently valued at $10.2 billion. What matters is that the company that snapped up video-sharing site YouTube for $1.65 billion now doesn't seem quite so profligate. Everything is relative. But why, many outside the industry are wondering, is the company started eight years ago in a Silicon Valley garage by Stanford University graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin al... (more)

PRESS CALL: TruST to Release Study on Cost of Complying with New Internet Tax System for Small and Mid-Sized Retailers

Speakers will Discuss Real-World Challenges and Financial Burdens of Untested, New Tax System WASHINGTON, Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the issue of Internet sales tax heats up in Congress, there has been much speculation about the costs that online and catalog retailers will face in integrating so-called "free" software under the Marketplace Fairness Act. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130923/DC84876LOGO) The notion that free software, from providers like Avalara and others, will keep costs low for businesses is untrue and ignores the significant costs of integrating and running "free" software. The True Simplification of Taxation (TruST) coalition will release a study that examines these software integration costs an... (more)

The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure...
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
