Thoroughly knowing the difference between the three prominent types of datacenter storage will help you immensely in job interviews, product pitches and tech conferences. Server storage is typically stored in one of three different methods. Since each acronym is similar, it is imperative for you to know the stark differences when discussing DAS, SAN and NAS. What is DAS? DAS stands for direct-attached storage. Think about the way servers used to be managed. You would buy a 1U or 2U server, pop it in a rack and use the hard disk space or hard disk array present on the server itself. Storage that is directly attached may use the SCSI, SATA or SAS methods to interface with the motherboard of the server. For a long time, administrators were beginning to shy away from using DAS due to the inefficiencies and management overheard. Now that datacenter and server virtualiza... (more)

Open-source jclouds library supports ElasticHosts!

Following in the footsteps of Apache Libcloud, another open-source cloud library has added support for ElasticHosts. Oracle Disaster Recovery Site Hosted by Amazon Cloud

DR sites are typically built as an exact replica of the primary site. Application and database software is installed on DR site and sits there mostly unused, waiting for a disaster to happen. DR site is very expensive proposition than only large companies are able to afford. Amazon AWS is an interesting alternative to having your own DR site. Oracle databases on DR side are in Data Guard configuration with a primary site and actively apply archive log files shipped from there. Pay per use, scalable Amazon Cloud model makes it an attractive alternative to creating and maintaining your own DR site. During normal usage you will use only as many resources  CPU, memory) as is required to keep Oracle Data Guard active. Once disaster strikes you can switch over to DR site, add CPU and memory to your database and make it able to withstand regular load until primary site be... (more)

The Disruptor Framework: A Concurrency Framework for Java

Let's start with the basic question: What is the disruptor? The disruptor is a concurrency framework for Java that allows data sharing between threads. The age old way of coding a producer-consumer model is to use a queue as the buffer area between the producer and the consumer, where the producer adds data objects to the queue, which are in turn processed by the consumer. However, such a model does not work well at the hardware level and ends up being highly inefficient. The disruptor in its simplest form replaces the queue with a data structure known as the ‘ring buffer'. Which brings us to the next question, what is the ring buffer? The ring buffer is an array of fixed length (which must be a power of 2), it's circular and wraps. This data structure is at the core of what makes the disruptor super fast. Let's explore a simple everyday scenario in enterprise archit... (more)

In today's enterprise, digital transformation represents organizational change even more so than technology change, as customer preferences and behavior drive end-to-end transformation across lines of business as well as IT. To capitalize on the ubiquitous disruption driving this transformation, companies must be able to innovate at an increasingly rapid pace.
Providing secure, mobile access to sensitive data sets is a critical element in realizing the full potential of cloud computing. However, large data caches remain inaccessible to edge devices for reasons of security, size, format or limited viewing capabilities. Medical imaging, computer aided design and seismic interpretation are just a few examples of industries facing this challenge. Rather than fighting for incremental gains by pulling these datasets to edge devices, we need to embrace the i...

We build IoT infrastructure products - when you have to integrate different devices, different systems and cloud you have to build an application to do that but we eliminate the need to build an application. Our products can integrate any device, any system, any cloud regardless of protocol," explained Peter Jung, Chief Product Officer at Pulzze Systems, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA
The “Digital Era” is forcing us to engage with new methods to build, operate and maintain applications. This transformation also implies an evolution to more and more intelligent applications to better engage with the customers, while creating significant market differentiators. In both cases, the cloud has become a key enabler to embrace this digital revolution. So, moving to the cloud is no longer the question; the new questions are HOW and WHEN. To make this equation even more complex, most...

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
