The Internet of Things is tied together with a thin strand that is known as
time. Coincidentally, at the core of nearly all data analytics is a
timestamp.
When working with time series data there are a few core principles that
everyone should consider, especially across datasets where time is the common
boundary.
In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Scott, Director of Enterprise
Strategy & Architecture at MapR Technologies, will discuss single-value,
geo-spatial, and log time series data.
By focusing on enterprise applications and the data center, he will use
OpenTSDB as an example to explain some of these concepts including when to
use different storage models.

Introduction to PHP Security – Part 1
By Omad Habib
It is a question that has daunted software engineers for decades: how secure
is my software application? Modern web application development has evolved to
a point where one can build and launch an entire product or company revolved
around a full-fledged software-as-a-service. The only interface to your
product is the UI provided via a browser, mobile application, or the data
exposed by your web service API. Unfortunately, as these modern software
media continue to evolve into more sophisticated platforms, so do the areas
in which your product and your data become exposed to potential security
risks, criminal intrusions, and data theft.
We’ll explore in this blog frequent channels of attacking and exploiting a
PHP application. This blog is by no means an official guide to the security
of your application, and you sho... (more)
Writing shell scripts to automate the build and deploy process for ColdFusion
applications is not very much fun. The Jakarta Ant project is an open-source,
cross-platform alternative that makes it easy to automate the build and
deploy process.
But My Build and Deploy Process is Fine....
Maybe your build and deploy process for your latest application is fine - you
type a single command and your build process automatically retrieves your
application from the source control system, configures the application
appropriately for the target environment, and copies all the necessary files
to the production servers while you head to the coffee shop for your morning
cup of caffeine and the newspaper. But I know that the reality for the vast
majority of projects I've seen (including many of my own applications!) are
built and deployed using a written multistep checklist - some ... (more)
Full-Day Cloud Computing Bootcamp will take place during SYS-CON's Cloud
Computing Conference & Expo Europe, May 18-19, in Prague.
Cloud computing is an opportunity for businesses to implement low-cost,
low-power and high-efficiency systems to deliver scalable infrastructure. But
moving to a cloud infrastructure is not necessarily as nice and clean as the
providers would want you to think. With cloud infrastructures problems don't
magically go away; they just shift: you don't have scalability or storage
problems any more, but you need to constantly monitor the cloud and your
application in it.
Led by Alan Williamson, the Cloud Computing Bootcamp will illustrate all the
major players and provide a hands-on program with configuration samples, live
demos and working setups you can further adapt and play with.
Alan Williamson, founder of Blog-City.com, is a Sun Java Cha... (more)
Back in 2001 (wow – seems like yesterday!), F5 introduced the first-ever,
open/Web services API for network devices called iControl. With it, it
sparked a major shift in the way companies could look at integrating network
devices with applications. Leading software vendors figured it out. And,
thousands of companies since then have used iControl to build custom
monitoring apps, management solutions that more closely fit their internal
processes, and even automate some cool stuff including enabling applications
to tell the network how to deliver them.
While all fine and dandy (and fun to be a part of personally), the most
important decision and event was the willingness to embrace SOAP/XML. By
doing this (kudos to Joe Pruitt, BTW, for this call… it wasn’t without
some feisty internal debate, truth be told), it opened up API access to our
gear from virtually any SOAP... (more)

Rackspace Hosting Thursday open sourced the specifications for its Cloud
Servers and Cloud Files APIs under the Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution
license.
It says it worked with developers in an open community to create the
specifications and they can now copy, implement and modify the specs, which
Rackspace figures should help enable a "truly open cloud."
Of course Eucalyptus already offers an open source cloudware.
Eucalyptus Systems CTO Rich Wolski said he welcomed Rackspace's decision to
provide its client-side tools as open source because it will help achieve
cloud interoperability.
Rackspace is also making its Cloud Files language bindings for Java, PHP,
Python, C# and Ruby available under the MIT license.
The source code is up on GitHub, a public software versioning system, at
