Amazon Scales MySQL for Heavy Traffic

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has added Read Replicas to its Relational Database Service (RDS) to make it easier to scale MySQL deployments to meet the performance demands of high-traffic web applications. Read Replicas lets users create one or more copies of a MySQL Database Instance and an application serve read traffic from the multiple replicas. They can create or delete replicas in minutes using the point-and-click interface of the AWS Management Console. Amazon says Read Replicas can be made to another Availability Zone as a disaster-ready failover measure under its Multi-AZ deployments program. Once a Read Replica is created, any subsequent updates to the source will automatically be replicated in the Read Replica. Ubuntu Will First Hit High-End Smartphones in 2014

Ubuntu Touch has its first customer, CNET has learned. Canonical has just signed its first deal to supply a smartphone with its mobile operating system, Canonical founder and product strategy leader Mark Shuttleworth revealed in an interview here at the LeWeb conference. He wouldn’t say which company has agreed to use the Linux-based OS, but said it will be offered on high-end phones in 2014. “We have concluded our first set of agreements to ship Ubuntu on mobile phones,” Shuttleworth said. “We’ve shifted gears from ‘making a concept’ to ‘it’s going to ship.’ That has a big impact on the team.” And, he said, Canonical is in board-level discussions with several others: “We are now pretty much at the board level on four household brands. OpenStack Hits First Milestone

Three months after publicly starting down the road to imprint its NDA on the cloud by establishing a large-scale open source cloud platform called OpenStack free for anybody to use, Rackspace Hosting, its BFF NASA and a reportedly growing OpenStack community made their first official code drop Thursday. The milestone is called Austin - they're doing this alphabetically so presumably they have a ways to go - and it includes the all-important Amazon EC2-challenging OpenStack Compute provisioning engine that's supposed to blend the best of the Rackspace Cloud Servers widgetry that underlies its public cloud offering with NASA's own home-made Nebula cloud platform. Three Common Problems Solved With JSON One of the most common questions we get asked by customers is: “What’s the best way to log my data?” My answer is always: "log using JSON format wherever possible.” The next question we often get asked – (but not as much)… Yeah JSON, …Hmmm, what is JSON again? So JSON is: So JSON is: JavaScript Object Notation. But put simply, this is a way that data can be stored in a structured format, where each piece of data will usually have an identifier (known as a key) and a value (which can be in multiple formats).
