"These are still the early days of Cloud Computing, where delivery has so far
focused primarily on price, as set by the market leader, Amazon," notes Dave
Durkee, Founder, CEO & Technical Director of ENKI Consulting. "However, while
successful in the Web 2.0 market," he adds, "price-based cloud computing is
falling short of the expectations held by the Enterprise." He will be giving
a breakout session next week at SYS-CON's 1st International Cloud Computing
Conference & Expo (November 19-21, 2008) being held at The Fairmont Hotel in
San Jose, CA.
To address the Enterprise market, in Durkee's view, cloud offerings will
begin to move to address the separate market segments that are focused on
price and value.
"Value-based cloud offerings will focus on Enterprise requirements, including
reliability, performance, deployability, security, and services. This means

IBM has announced the IBM Retail Integration Framework, an enterprise
software architecture designed to help retailers accelerate the
implementation of new customer-focused strategies. For example, the new
framework, which is based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) strategy,
could help retailers introduce new product assortments and provide a
multi-channel customer experience whether a consumer is shopping online, in a
store, at a kiosk, or through any other sales channel including mobile
devices.
Retail companies are increasingly turning to solutions based on SOA to enable
them to integrate fragmented applications and processes and increase reuse

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that mashups are
moving from things that are conceptual and fun, to things that are productive
and businesslike. The fact is, developers are leveraging mashups to solve all
sorts of business problems these days, and the speed to production and the
value of these little applications is compelling.
However, when you look at mashups, you're not only looking at the mixing and
matching of resources found on the Web and / or within the enterprise, but at
a true composite application as we've been defining for years in the world of
SOA. Thus, mashups are indeed SOA, and SOA does indeed include the concept of
mashups. However, there are many in the emerging world of Web 2.0 who would
differ on this point of view. We’ll talk more about that later.
What I’m asserting is that, when talking about mashups in the con... (more)
Will Ulitzer and SocialYell Dominate News Content on The Web (Eventually)? is
the blog title of Gartner's Anthony Bradley.
In his blog entry, Bradley writes: "Hype around Ulitzer.com (the
social-journalism news magazine site) is climbing. At one point they were
offering authors 200% of their Google AdSense revenue... I am convinced that
the only way to change the world is through collectively determining how we
spend our money and our votes. Will Ulitzer be this vehicle?"
Ulitzer content is grouped in 25 distinct subjects from "Aerospace and
Defense" to "Travel and Hospitality." Each subject group offers an unlimited
number of topics, and each topic may contain thousands of peer-reviewed
feature stories, bylined articles, blog posts, news, reviews, commentary, and
unique editorial content authored by top experts in their fields.

The problem of AJAX, interstitial request patterns, and the effect on the
performance and availability of your applications.
There are several reasons why applications need to be scaled out but they all
come down to essentially addressing the same core problem: resource
consumption. In the case of networked applications this often means
specifically TCP connection resources. Now most people don’t think of TCP
connections as a resource, per se, but every web and application server has
an upper limit to the number of TCP connections it can hold open at any given
time. In some cases this limit can be changed; for example Apache can be
recompiled with a higher limit to increase capacity but depending on the
underlying resources (RAM, CPU) available this can result in a degradation of
performance. And even if you do recompile Apache with a higher limit the
operative par... (more)

Dmitry Evteev @ Positive Technologies Research has discovered (yet) another
method of exploitation that allows for the injection of malicious SQL into
sites and databases.
A method that I discovered today in MySQL documentation struck me with its
simplicity and the fact that I haven’t noticed it before. Let me describe
this method of bypassing WAF.
MySQL servers allow one to use comments of the following type:
/*!sql-code*/ and /*!12345sql-code*/
As can be noticed, SQL code will be executed from the comment in both cases!
The latter construction means that "sql-code" should be executed only if the
DBMS version is later than the given value.
As I have been repeatedly asserted ... (more)
The great mid-May Facebook IPO has reportedly been delayed maybe until
mid-June waiting on Mark Zuckerberg to wrap up whatever else is distracting
him right now besides his billion-dollar Instagram acquisition or the $550
million patent deal with Microsoft, which also mean the company needs to make
more financial disclosures. According to CNBC the pre-IPO roadshow may have
slipped from May 7 to May 14 or even the end of May when the Memorial weekend
then becomes a problem.
