Greenpeace dropped some big caca into the water with an announcement just
before April Fools' Day about Cloud Computing and its effect on Global
Climate Change. Apparently angered by Facebook's commissioning of a
coal-fired power plant in Oregon to feed a hungry new datacenter, Greenpeace
named Amazon, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Intel, and others in its report,
which presented several "demands" of how these companies should be behaving
with respect to their carbon footprints.

I wrote an initial story about all this, then sent out inquiries to all the
companies mentioned in the report for a reaction. Some companies--notably
Rackspace and Cisco--have extensive material available on their websites
regarding energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and related
issues. This is a big topic, one that... (more)
The good news is that people are able to watch Manny Pacquiao's fights here
in the Philippines free of charge, on the leading broadcast television
network, GMA. The bad news is that GMA shamelessly fills its coverage with
enough commercials to choke an elephant.
Estimates of poverty in the Philippines vary, but it's realistic to say that
40% of the country's 92 million people fall below a poverty line no matter
where it's drawn. Another 20% or so struggle to have more than one meal a

middle class along the ... (more)
Eucalyptus CEO Marten Mickos (pictured below) continues to be a profound
analyst as well as industry executive, especially when he talks about beer
and cloud computing. He'll be speaking at the upcoming @CloudExpo in November
in Santa Clara.
We asked him a few questions about the state of cloud computing today, and
here's what he had to say:
Cloud Computing Journal: You've said public and private cloud are "two
dimensions of the same world." Are you in essence saying "all the world's a
hybrid?"

"Oh, dev is dev and ops is ops, and never the twain shall meet." With
apoloies to Rudyard Kipling and all of his fans, this describes the early
state of the two sides of DevOps.
Yet the DevOps approach is demanded by cloud computing, as the speed,
flexibility, and scalability in today's so-called "Third Platform" must not
be hindered by the traditional limitations of software development and
deployment.
A recent report by Gartner, for example, says that 25% of Global 2000
companies will be DevOps shops by next year! "As we see more IT shops running
like software companies, we'l... (more)
Read Sun's Take on "Open AJAX"– Tim Bray Speaks Out
IBM is leading, but apparently not controlling, a bold initiative known as

The Open AJAX initiative does not have a centralized structure or website,
but is rather an idea that is being formally backed by BEA, Borland, the Dojo
Foundation, the Eclipse Foundation, Laszlo Systems, Mozilla Corporation,
Novell, Openwave Systems, Oracle, Red Hat, Yahoo, Zend and Zimbra. A
