iPad on Ulitzer - There may be little left for Apple to announce about its purported tablet or iSlate come January 27, a date change since January 26 was noised about. The rumor mill is slowly teasing out all its secrets.
The great unveiling, according to the Financial Times, is still supposed to be at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco but now it’s supposedly on the last Wednesday of the month rather than the last Tuesday.
The Wall Street Journal came running out late Monday with the news – shared by “people briefed by the company” – that Apple won’t start delivering the widget until March, another date previously reported.
The New York Times says the same thing. It also said there “hasn’t been this much hype about a tablet since Moses came down from the mountain.”
The Journal says it heard the dingus will have a netbook-like diagonal 10- to 11-inch screen, putting it at odds with those who claim it’s more like seven inches but apparently confirming what others said right after Christmas and the former head of Google China Kai-Fu Lee said on his personal blog. The Journal allows that Apple could come out with multiple versions at different price points although it guided towards roughly a thousand bucks, “possibly including a subscription to a nationwide Wi-Fi wireless service.”
It’s convinced the device will be multi-purpose and let users watch movies and TV shows, play games, surf the web and read e-books, textbooks and whatever’s left of newspapers.
There’s been some debate over whether the thing’s a full-fledged computer or only a big iPod Touch. The former would mean it could run Windows 7 and coveted Windows apps. And at a thousand bucks a pop it better be a computer – true even at the ~$800 Gismodo’s saying.
Apple Inside thinks the tablet’s touch screen keyboard will have a tactile, Braille-like feel based on a newly discovered patent. A boon for people who touch-type.
DigiTimes says Foxconn, which already makes iPods and iPhones, is gonna make the thing.
Australia’s Smarthouse says Google will follow with an Android-based tablet – others say the Chrome OS – made and sold by HTC that’s built around a Qualcomm processor and some newfangled Adobe software.
Phone Arena, a blog few have heard of, claims to be quoting Apple internal documents in saying the Apple device is built on a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip. We think not. To Intel’s chagrin Apple’s iPhone uses an ARM chip and the tablet may too but maybe Apple is using its 2008 PA Semi acquisition for the tablet. PA did power-efficient PowerPCs before it got bought. Goodness knows what it’s doing now.
Otherwise Phone Arena claims the tablet can support 2GB-8GB of RAM with a 120GB SATA drive and has a webcam, two USB ports, an SD slot, stereo speakers, gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an operating system called Mac OS X Clouded Leopard 10.7.
It also says it will include iTunes, Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari of course, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, Photo Booth and Front Row.
It says the touch screen won’t show fingerprints.

Okay, so my vacations don’t necessary seem like other folks’ vacations. Yes, we relax. Yes, we spend too much money. Yes, we eat too much food. But for some reason, unusual learning opportunities pop up during our vacations, and this year’s vacation was no different. This year’s vacation theme was… logistics.
Our logistics foray started by watching the artsy-fartsy movie “The Lunchbox.” I hate artsy-fartsy movies, but my wife insists on watching them on vacation. The movie was excellent. However, I was totally mesmerized by the lunchbox delivery system that was a featured part of the movie. T...
Web-scale networking, also known as hyperscale, is a concept that has been popularized by companies like Google, Netflix and Facebook, who adopted this model for its proven cost economics, resiliency, scalability, and in some cases, better performance for large companies.
In recent months, the web-scale strategy has begun to gain the attention of enterprises in response to the changing data center landscape and growth of compute-heavy, complex technologies like AI, machine learning, and big data analytics initiatives. What should IT pros know about web-scale?
Our cities have been connected since the dawn of urbanization in the Indus Valley and on the plains of Mesopotamia nearly ten millennia ago. Cities exist to gather and connect people, bringing us together into communities and joint ventures that need complex networks of communication. But in recent years the connected city has come to mean something more. Today and in the future, the connected city will not just be about people connecting with people, but people with machines, people with people via machines, and perhaps most importantly, machines with machines.
Machine learning, AI, cognitive computing, natural language understanding, image recognition, pattern matching, autonomous devices – these are just a few of 2017’s loosely defined catchall phrases. But in practice, they each refer to a significant field of study that is guaranteed to have an impact on the way people live and how business is done. So here are five things that you, as the leader of an organization that is singularly focused on creating shareholder value (however you define it), need to know
“Self-driving cars are the future of ride-sharing,” proclaimed an industry expert who shall remain nameless. The comment struck me as ridiculous. From my point of view, Uber (and all car services) already provide self-driving cars. You don’t drive the car; the driver does. Do you really care whether the car is controlled by a human/machine partnership or it’s an autonomous mechanical device? Other than to acknowledge that you are the person the car is supposed to pick up, you don’t need to speak to the human driver any more than you would need to speak to the natural language–understanding alg...
21st International Cloud Expo, taking place October 31 - November 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading industry players in the world. Cloud computing is now being embraced by a majority of enterprises of all sizes. Yesterday's debate about public vs. private has transformed into the reality of hybrid cloud: a recent survey shows that 74% of enterprises have a hybrid cloud strategy. Meanwhile, 94% of enterprises are using some form of XaaS – software, platform, and infrastructure as ...
It takes years – sometimes a lifetime – to perfect certain skills in life: hitting a jump shot off the dribble, nailing that double high C on the trumpet, parallel parking a Ford Expedition. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book, “Outliers,” discussing the amount of work – 10,000 hours – required to perfect a skill (while the exactness of 10,000 hours has come under debate, it is still a useful point that people need to invest considerable time and effort to master a skill). But once we get comfortable with something that we feel that we have mastered, we become reluctant to change. We are reluctant t...

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices - computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by 2020. This number w...
I’ve always felt that bringing an economics perspective to our big data and digital transformation discussions is more important than a traditional accounting or even information technology (IT) perspective. Heck, I believe that a Chief Data Officer’s background should be more along the lines of economics than IT. Economics brings a forward-looking perspective on creating value (wealth). In fact, economics is defined as “the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer (capture) of wealth.”
