It’s all over for us humans. It may not have been “The Matrix”[1], but
the machines look like they are finally poised to take our jobs. Machines
powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning process data faster,
aren’t hindered by stupid human biases, don’t waste time with gossip on
social media and don’t demand raises or more days off.
While there is a high probability that machine learning and artificial
intelligence will play an important role in whatever job you hold in the
future, there is one way to "future-proof" your career...embrace the power of
design thinking.
Figure 1: Is Artificial Intelligence Putting Humans Out of Work?
I have written about design thinking before (see the blog “Can Design
Thinking Unleash Organizational Innovation?”), but I want to use this blog
to provide more specifics about what it is about design thinking that can

Welcome to the Era of Open Analytics
Cloud applications are seeing a deluge of requests to support the exploding
advanced analytics market. "Open analytics" is the emerging strategy to
deliver that data through an open data access layer, in the cloud, to be
directly consumed by external analytics tools and popular programming
languages. An increasing number of data engineers and data scientists use a
variety of platforms and advanced analytics languages such as SAS, R, Python
and Java, as well as frameworks such as Hadoop and Spark. Cloud APIs are
commonly designed to support application integration representing a
disconnect with the analytics ecosystem. These combined trends create
significant demand for a "bring-your-own-analytics" (BYOA) ca... (more)
Powering Smart Cities with IoT, Real-Time and an Agile Data Platform
Smart cities have the potential to change our lives at so many levels for
citizens: less pollution, reduced parking obstacles, better health, education
and more energy savings. Real-time data streaming and the Internet of Things
(IoT) possess the power to turn this vision into a reality. However, most
organizations today are building their data infrastructure to focus solely on
addressing immediate business needs vs. a platform capable of quickly
adapting emerging technologies to address future business challenges.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Nick Piette, Chief Evangelist at Talend, will
include how Johnson Controls utilize sensors, Big Data integration and
cloud-based data lake solutions.

Leveraging AI for Cloud Management
Businesses and business units of all sizes can benefit from cloud computing,
but many don't want the cost, performance and security concerns of public
cloud nor the complexity of building their own private clouds. Today, some
cloud vendors are using artificial intelligence (AI) to simplify cloud
deployment and management.

Machine learning, AI, cognitive computing, natural language understanding,
image recognition, pattern matching, autonomous devices - these are just a
few of 2017's loosely defined catchall phrases. But in practice, they each
refer to a significant field of study that is guaranteed to have an impact on
the way people live and how business is done. So here are five things that
you, as the leader of an organization that is singularly focused on creating
shareholder value (however you define it), need to know:
1. Your Various Units Are Working on Data-Driven Systems in a Vacuum
If you do not have strict, well-enforced data governance policies, your
various units are busy making a data mess that you will eventually have to
clean up. Each unit has any number of projects in the works. They must! Their
competitors are making apps and creating systems designed to reduce frictio... (more)
Speed, Quality, Impact - Building Success on the Three Foundations of DevOps
Many organizations adopt DevOps to reduce cycle times and deliver software
faster; some take on DevOps to drive higher quality and better end-user
experience; others look to DevOps for a clearer line-of-sight to customers to
drive better business impacts. In truth, these three foundations go together.
In this power panel at @DevOpsSummit 21st Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps
Conference Co-Chair Andi Mann, industry experts will discuss how leading
organizations build application success from all three of these foundations
of DevOps - speed, quality, and impact.

Why Is the Healthcare Industry Abuzz About Blockchain?
Blockchain. A day doesn't seem to go by without seeing articles and
discussions about the technology. According to PwC executive Seamus Cushley,
approximately $1.4B has been invested in blockchain just last year. In
Gartner's recent hype cycle for emerging technologies, blockchain is
approaching the peak. It is considered by Gartner as one of the ‘Key
platform-enabling technologies to track.' While there is a lot of ‘hype vs
reality' discussions going on, there is no arguing that blockchain is being
taken very seriously across industries and cannot be ignored.
A large percentage of the discussion does seem to focus in the financial
services industry. This is not surprising given blockchain's historic legacy
(I know, a disruptive technology already has a legacy) with Bitcoin and
crypto currencies. In my article, ... (more)

True Democratization of Analytics with Meta-Learning
By Mark Troester
There are many solutions that claim to democratize analytics, but they are
really constrained. A meta-learning approach democratizes without limits.
The democratization of analytics has become a popular term, and a quick
Google search will generate results that explore the necessity of empowering
more people with analytics and the rise of citizen data scientists. The
ability to easily make better use of your (constantly growing) pool of data
is a critical driver of business success, but many of the existing solutions
that claim to democratize analytics only do so within severe limits. If you
have a complex business scenario and are looking to get revolutionary
insights using them, it’s easy to come away disappointed.
However, the democratization of analytics isn’t just a buzzword that refers
to a n... (more)
