Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in
business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo.
It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new
opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition?
Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study
that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the
globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider
the digital business transformation outlook in 2017.
Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO
CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are
collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)
Cisco CEO John Chambers Monday became the latest in a long line of
visionaries to come down from the mountain top with an architectural roadmap
to the Promised Land at an exploitable industry inflection point.
If the purportedly game-changing next-generation platform scheme succeeds,
Chambers will be rich, even more fiendishly rich than he already is, and
Cisco will own not only the data center, but the cloud, the data center's
logical successor, and the computer establishment, as we know it, will be
up-ended.
As prophesied, the widgetry, Cisco's answer to its slowing networking
fortunes and the growth demanded of it by Wall Street, centers on a
newfangled Nehalem-based blade server called the Unified Computing System,
which is all about convergence with networking at its heart.
There's no guarantee it will take off; it's still slideware; and it will take
time to gau... (more)

If nothing else, HP Thursday morning made Dell's proposed acquisition of 3PAR
more expensive.
That was when Dell sweetened HP's unexpected $24-a-share bid on Monday for
the virtualized storage house by 30 cents to $1.53 billion, up from the $1.15
billion that 3PAR accepted from Dell last week.
HP now has to decide whether to raise again, a move that would presumably be
conditioned on getting any advance to stick. See, Dell's got perpetual
matching rights.
Anyway, Dell says 3PAR has accepted its amended offer and that if the obscure
little company walks away this time it's going to cost its suitor $72
million, up from the $53.5 million termination fee in their original
agreement.
HP and Dell are chasing the unprofitable $200 million-a-year 3PAR for its
cloud potential.
Wall Street evidently expects HP to counter because at $26 and change 3PAR's
stock price remain... (more)
Who's kidding whom? Oracle co-president Chuck Phillips was fired. Not only is
that utterly obvious through the thin veneer of the "resignation" twaddle
Oracle handed out but a source proverbially close to the situation says he
was asked for his resignation on Saturday.
Reportedly Phillips was sandbagged, gulled into believing that ex-HP CEO Mark
Hurd was going to come into Oracle as some kind of triumvir alongside him and
his fellow president Safra Catz until he was unceremoniously pushed out,
stunned to hear Oracle say that he had asked to leave in December and was
importuned to stay through the Sun integration. "Asked," huh. "His decision"
to leave, huh.
Apparently he learned nothing about his former boss Oracle CEO Larry
Ellison's psyche during his seven years working for the man. Phillips cut his
own throat when he was disloyal enough to secretly plan on going t... (more)

The industry is heated with debates on whether adopting private or public
cloud is the smartest, best, cheapest, you name it choice. But this debate is
missing the mark. Businesses shouldn't be discussing public vs. private, but
rather how can they make the two work together to their greatest advantage.
The ideal is to merge on-premise and off-premise into a seamless environment
that can be managed as a single entity.
A forward-looking stance that will eventually see major adoption. But as of
late 2013, hybrid cloud was still "rare," noted Gartner analyst Tom Bittman.
In this discussion, Marten will talk about how public clouds need on-premise
satellites to win and conversely, how on-premise environments cannot be
really powerful unless they are connected to the public cloud. It's not two
competing worlds. It's two dimensions of the same world.

Aug. 24, 2017 11:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,871 | By Elizabeth White DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure.
