Continuous Integration topic launched today on Ulitzer.
Continuous integration (http://ci.ulitzer.com) describes a set of software
engineering practices that speed up the delivery of software by decreasing
integration times.
Hudson is an open source "continuous integration" (CI) server initially
developed at Sun.
This whitepaper describes the capabilities of Hudson, compares Hudson's key
features to those of competitive offerings, and summarizes why Hudson has
quickly become the industry's most widely adopted open source CI server.

The US Federal Communications Commission has recently reported that "theft of
digital information has become the most commonly reported fraud, surpassing
physical theft." Businesses can do a lot to protect themselves. The FCC
issued a Tip Sheet for small businesses to promote employee security

in (or migrating to) cloud environments; data security, cloud computing
security issues, and challenges take on new meanings and require new
strategies.
Security in the Cloud: Unique Challenges
In the cloud, data security poses new risks and challenges. We are no longer
concerned just with burglars breaking into our offices to steal computers,
but rather with the data belonging to complete systems deployed to the cloud.
When using public cloud infrastructure like that of AWS, VMware, Microsoft

Coach Wei's Blog
Here is a question that I have been pondering on and off for quite a while:
Why do "cool kids" choose Ruby or PHP to build websites instead of Java?
I have to admit that I do not have an answer.
Why do I even care? Because I am a Java developer. Like many Java developers,
I get along with Java well. Not only the language itself, but the development
environments (Eclipse for example), step-by-step debugging helper, wide
availability of libraries and code snippets, and the readily accessible
information on almost any technical question I may have on Java via Google.
Last but not least, I go to JavaOne and see 10,000 people that talk and walk
just like me.
The other reason that I ponder this question is that the power of Java is a
perfect fit for the areas where websites may need more than markups or
scripting, such as middleware logic. PHP and Ruby etc ... (more)

Here at AppNeta, we get to see a lot about how people build their web
applications. From simple PHP scripts to heavily service-oriented Java clouds
to monolithic Django apps, everybody’s product is architected a little
differently. We’re still out to trace everything, and today I want to talk
how to get visibility into an important component of any complex system: the
messaging queue. Specifically, let’s look at how to trace a job from Rails
using Resque.
Messaging Queues
If you haven’t used a messaging queue in your app, the idea is simple.
Instead of forcing all the work to happen during the request, while the user
is waiting, you can delay some of the more time-consuming tasks. You can do
anything in these tasks, ranging from a simple insert to kicking off a series
of user analytics that touch all parts of your infrastructure. The advantage
is that you can retur... (more)
TraceView by AppNeta provides deep performance monitoring of web
applications.
It gives you insight into your web application performance such as this:
and a per request drill-down that shows you the nitty gritty detail of where
time is spent in individual requests (full-size):
and even end-user monitoring:
I run it on Gameface and PasswordPusher - it’s an essential tool in
identifying problem areas, performance bottlenecks and simply poor performing
code. (Read: ActionView)
Disclaimer: I authored the Ruby instrumentation for Traceview so I may be a
bit biased. …but with good reason!
Installation
Installing TraceView consists of two parts: 1) installing the system daemon
on your host and 2) installing the Ruby gem in your application.
Why a system daemon? TraceView uses a system daemon to collect
instrumentation from sources beyond application code such as host me... (more)
This is a republished guest blog post. The original article is written by
Manfred Stienstra. You can find it on the fingertips blog.
Developers need to be able to run tests quickly or they will stop running
them.
Slow test suites are often partially caused by slow startup times. Once
you’ve eliminated this problem, you might want to take a look at individual
tests.
Note that test suites stress your code in a totally different way from the
production environment. A slow test suite doesn’t mean your app will be
slow in production and the other way around. Never optimize your code for the
test suite.
Sometimes slow tests are an indication of slow code, always measure to be
sure.
Measure first
Always start by measuring the actual runtime of your test suite or individual
tests when trying to speed them up. Always do a few test runs to get a
feeling for the variance i... (more)
ChatOps: Let’s Talk Plugins
By Eric Sigler
This is the second post in our series on ChatOps
In our last post, you learned what ChatOps is, how it works and the ways in
which it can transform your organization. By promoting collaboration,
communication and rapid learning, ChatOps presents some serious benefits not
only for engineers, but also non-technical teams too.
We want to take that a bit farther with our next two posts. Once you've
chosen a framework and kicked the tires a bit, you'll probably want to add
features to your bot. The plugins detailed below can be easily added and
will help out with previously manual tasks you may have had to do daily.
At PagerDuty, we use Ruby-based Lita and our chat bot, Officer URL, with
a variety of plugins, so those are the examples we'll roll with below.
But, many of these plugins have alternatives in other frameworks so you ... (more)
