Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in
business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo.
It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new
opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition?
Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study
that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the
globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider
the digital business transformation outlook in 2017.
Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO
CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are
collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)

Hard Choices Are Required When Adopting a Cloud Operating Model
When was the last time you’ve ever heard anyone say “IT Applications &
Operations”? Frankly, in my 30+ year career in IT, I don’t believe I’ve
ever heard anyone use this term. The typical term we hear is IT
Infrastructure & Operations. These two go together like Peanut Butter and
Jelly, which tells us a lot about how we view the field of IT.
For those that may not be familiar with the role of IT Operations, Joe
Hertvik does a great job here of describing IT Operations Management as
someone engaged in the role of providing this service to the business. As you
can see it’s very interesting how he specifically addresses the gap between
responsibilities regarding IT Applications and IT Operations as a Venn
diagram in which there is no overlap.
However, as we progress from a pre-Cloud Operating Model world t... (more)

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) doesn’t like Microsoft, doesn’t like
software patents, it especially doesn’t like Microsoft’s patents, and it
doesn’t trust the two of them in the same room together.
It’s convinced that Microsoft is eventually going to sue any open source
developer who uses Mono, the Novell-supported open source version of
Microsoft’s .NET widgetry, or who writes open source programs in C#, the
Microsoft development language.
It’s warning off developers now because Microsoft has added both C# and
Mono – or rather the ECMA 334 and 335 standards that embrace them – to
its two-year-old irrevocable, legally binding Community Promise not to sue.

Let's start with the basic question: What is the disruptor? The disruptor is
a concurrency framework for Java that allows data sharing between threads.
The age old way of coding a producer-consumer model is to use a queue as the
buffer area between the producer and the consumer, where the producer adds
data objects to the queue, which are in turn processed by the consumer.
However, such a model does not work well at the hardware level and ends up
being highly inefficient. The disruptor in its simplest form replaces the
queue with a data structure known as the ‘ring buffer'. Which brings us to
the next question, what is the ring buffer? The ring buffer is an array of
fixed length (which must be a power of 2), it's circular and wraps. This data
structure is at the core of what makes the disruptor super fast.
Let's explore a simple everyday scenario in enterprise archit... (more)
Oracle’s new best friend Mellanox Technologies said Monday that it’s
buying sometime rival Voltaire for $8.75 a share, which works out to $218
million cash, roughly a 36% premium.
Less what Voltaire’s got in the bank, it’s going for $176 million.
Oracle recently bought 10.2% of Mellanox; it uses Mellanox’ InfiniBand
widgetry in its servers, including its precious Exadata appliance.
Mellanox was one of the many exhibitors at 7th Cloud Expo in Silicon Valley
in Nov 2010
Terms of that particular transaction weren’t announced. Oracle’s money
will help Mellanex buy Voltaire. Oracle did say the investment was meant
“solidify a common interest in the future of InfiniBand,” and until
Voltaire branched out recently into 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches it was a
pure InfiniBand play. Now Mellanox can use Voltaire as a springboard into
Ethernet.
The deal should close in Q1 and cr... (more)

As a resourceful developer, you're not writing code from scratch anymore. You
probably have access to a vast amount of code you wrote at previous jobs, and
a lot of your development probably relies at least in some part around third
party or open source software. Every savvy developer knows their way around
Sourceforge, Codeplex, or GitHub, and with access to readily available code
that frees you up to tackle real challenges, there really is no downside to
open source code.
Sure, you're probably aware that many open source projects have license
obligations tied to them. And licenses are not generally written for
developer consumption, so you may be part of a growing contingent of
developers that doesn't care about them, but it's likely that your manager
cares.
With the increasing complexity of software, organizations are more cognizant
than ever about the potenti... (more)
