Shrinking your Url’s is all the rage nowadays. If you are on Twitter,
then odds are you have used one. Despite CodingHorror’s distaste for them
in his recent blog post on Url Shorteners: Destroying the Web since 2002,
they are a fact of life when we live in a world of 140 character status
updates.
So what’s a URL shrinking service anyway? Well, to put it simply, you
supply them with a URL, they then supply you with a shorter URL containing a
lookup “key”. When future requests are made to this shorter URL,
connections are routed to that services website where they convert the short
URL to the original URL and issue a HTTP Redirect back to your browser to
send you off to the original long url website.
So, what’s a guy, or gal, to do if they want to set their status
programmatically on Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, or the other gazillion
social networking sites ... (more)

Zend Technologies, the PHP commercializer, has put out a major new release of
Zend Studio, its IDE for the PHP language.
Designed to improve productivity for professional-grade web application
development, Studio 7.0 supports the newly released PHP 5.3 language as well
as tight integration with Zend Server and Zend Framework.
Meanwhile, Zend Framework has been updated for the fifth time in two years.
Rev 1.9 features the requisite PHP 5.3 support, which means developers can
use the latest PHP language features in their Zend Framework-based apps, plus
new community-built professional-level features for web application
development.
The company says RESTful Web Services are now easier to build because of
automated routing/detection. And there’s message queuing for asynchronous

The Internet is a great resource, but it is sometimes too much to wade
through hundreds of web pages looking for tips about using Tomcat with a
database. So we at Monitis have done it for you! Below are some of the more
useful tips found in various places on the Internet.
Tip #1 – Don’t Ignore Database Performance
Webapps typically use databases. So, you have to tune the webapp along with
the database if you want optimal performance. Take our advice. Performance
test the database and define an appropriate database connection pool
(maxActive, maxIdle, and maxWait in the Resource element).
Tip #2 – Determine the Cause of Database Connection Timeouts
Simply increasing maxWait in the resource element may not be the best way to
deal with database connection timeouts. The timeouts may be the result of
garbage collection.
Garbage collection requires that all running processe... (more)
Are you developing or hosting PHP applications? Are you doing performance
sanity checks along your delivery pipeline? No? Not Yet? Then start with a
quick check. It only takes 15 minutes and it really pays off. As a developer
you can improve your code, and as somebody responsible for your build
pipeline you can automate these checks and enforce additional quality gates.
And as a PHP Hosting company / group you will be able optimize your
deployment and run more of these apps and sustain more load on the same
infrastructure.
Just like Java, .NET, and Ruby type applications, the top performance
bottlenecks are fairly easy to spot and fixing them improves end user
performance and saves compute power for your servers.

@CloudExpo Stories By Pat Romanski Both SaaS vendors and SaaS buyers are going “all-in” to hyperscale IaaS platforms such as AWS, which is disrupting the SaaS value proposition. Why should the enterprise SaaS consumer pay for the SaaS service if their data is resident in adjacent AWS S3 buckets? If both SaaS sellers and buyers are using the same cloud tools, automation and pay-per-transaction model offered by IaaS platforms, then why not host the “shrink-wrapped” software in the customers’ cloud? Further, serverless computing, cl... Jun. 19, 2017 10:00 AM EDT Reads: 2,149 | By Elizabeth White When growing capacity and power in the data center, the architectural trade-offs between server scale-up vs. scale-out continue to be debated. Both approaches are valid: scale-out adds multiple, smaller servers running in a distributed computing model, while scale-up adds fewer, more powerful servers that are capable of running larger workloads. It’s worth noting that there are additional, unique advantages that scale-up architectures offer. One big advantage is large memory and compute capacity... Startups are a threat to incumbents like never before, and a major enabler for startups is that they are instantly “cloud ready.” If innovation moves at the pace of IT, then your company is in trouble. Why? Because your data center will not keep up with frenetic pace AWS, Microsoft and Google are rolling out new capabilities.
