Virtualization Expo on Ulitzer Virtualization cuts across just about all that you might find in the today's data center: to one degree or another, clients, servers, applications, storage systems, data networks, and security can all now be virtualized. . By compressing multiple workloads onto a single physical server, Virtualization enables data centers to save tremendous amounts of money on hardware, power, cooling and floor space. For small and midsized enterprises, Virtualization can also help data centers tap into levels of fault tolerance previously enjoyed only by huge organizations. And chief executives are discovering that Virtualization has the potential not only to improve the balance sheet, but also to strengthen competitive advantage and put a shine on the corporate brand. The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

Where Are RIA Technologies Headed in 2008?

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because they can only give you answers." Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered. From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed. What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX? Eric Miraglia of Yahoo! 1.  (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the iPhone SDK vs using AJAX? 2.  How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to make it faster?  3.  When it comes to accessibility, how do I know what's required of me for my rich web apps?  Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... Web 2.0 Is Dead And It's Time To Get Out Of This Mess!

Industry blogger Alex Bunardzic writes in his "Ethical Software by Alex Bunardzic" blog: "Now that Microsoft has jumped onto the web 2.0 bandwagon, it is more than obvious that web 2.0 is dead as a doornail. Everyone knows by now that anything Microsoft touches turns into this big slimy brown mush, so now’s definitely the time to get out of that mess." Bunardzic analyzes and explains the Web 2.0 movement's fast rise and quick demise in his blog entry. He ends his blog with the following words: "So while wikis have been the first harbingers of the web 2.0 revolution, they continue to be the next wave, bravely pointing the way even as the web 2.0 is right now dying a horrible death of socio-pathological abusiveness. Let us therefore leave the frothy and frivolous world of web 2.0 popularity contest ridden sites, and march forward to the new web that will be less about ... (more)

When growing capacity and power in the data center, the architectural trade-offs between server scale-up vs. scale-out continue to be debated. Both approaches are valid: scale-out adds multiple, smaller servers running in a distributed computing model, while scale-up adds fewer, more powerful servers that are capable of running larger workloads. It’s worth noting that there are additional, unique advantages that scale-up architectures offer. One big advantage is large memory and compute capacity...
