I'm told that it has been 21 years since Scrum became public when Jeff
Sutherland and I presented it at an Object-Oriented Programming, Systems,
Languages & Applications (OOPSLA) workshop in Austin, TX, in October of 1995.
Time sure does fly. Things mature. I'm still in the same building and at the
same company where I first formulated Scrum.[1] Initially nobody knew of
Scrum, yet it is now an open source body of knowledge translated into more
than 30 languages.[2] People use Scrum worldwide for developing software and

Hard Choices Are Required When Adopting a Cloud Operating Model
When was the last time you’ve ever heard anyone say “IT Applications &
Operations”? Frankly, in my 30+ year career in IT, I don’t believe I’ve
ever heard anyone use this term. The typical term we hear is IT
Infrastructure & Operations. These two go together like Peanut Butter and
Jelly, which tells us a lot about how we view the field of IT.

For a phrase that’s being thrown around a lot recently, what does “Digital Transformation” really mean? When someone says that they want to digitally transform their business, what does one really mean, why do they want to do it, and should they approach this “digital transformation” process?
First off, let’s start with a definition. If we don’t know what we are trying to achieve, then how do we know how to get there? Or to quote the famous Greek philosopher Yogi Berra: “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.”
The Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved quite rapidly, especially if you consider how long it took for little packet-switching networks like ARPANET to morph into today’s nearly ubiquitous internet. Our nascent IoT ecosystem is already populated by billions of sensors and connected devices, hundreds of millions of servers, and thousands of hybrid clouds serving billions of people… all of them perpetually producing and/or consuming data in an explosion of information.
Keeping your enterprise data safe and secure is more important now than it ever has been. IT has always been an ever-changing industry, but in recent years, it has been changing more and more quickly. Now, thanks to the cloud, big data, and mobile devices all expanding at once, it may seem like the entire IT field is completely different every other day. This means your company is going to almost always be re-evaluating and upgrading your network security tools and methods. It's hard to deal with the current threats to your data, never mind prepare for new ones.
Containers, microservices and DevOps are all the rage lately. You can read about how great they are and how they’ll change your life and the industry everywhere. So naturally when we started a new company and were deciding how to architect our app, we went with microservices, containers and DevOps. About now you’re expecting a story of how everything went so smoothly, we’re now pushing out code ten times a day, but the reality is quite different.
The cloud’s massive success and the growing desire for Big Data analytics are just two of the factors that are making traditional storage architectures obsolete. Organizations cannot afford to scale bygone storage appliances. Even if they could, the time it would take is unacceptable in the digital world. Adding multiple servers could not accommodate storage demands, either. Vertical storage architecture contains bottlenecks that slow performance to a crawl.
A common misconception about the cloud is that one size fits all. Companies expecting to run all of their operations using one cloud solution or service must realize that doing so is akin to forcing the totality of their business functionality into a straightjacket. Unlocking the full potential of the cloud means embracing the multi-cloud future where businesses use their own cloud, and/or clouds from different vendors, to support separate functions or product groups.
