The purpose of enterprise architecture is to be able to consciously design an
enterprise rather than allowing it to happen randomly and unconsciously. It
is worth noting that it implies knowledge of a certain intended outcome or
desired state in mind.
Enterprise architecture (EA) is a discipline that enables designing the
enterprise consciously and deliberately, rather than letting it happen
randomly. EA design is informed by business vision, strategic intent, and
insights on the functioning of the enterprise. So the purpose of enterprise
architecture is to be able to consciously design an enterprise rather than
allowing it to happen randomly and unconsciously. It is worth noting that it
implies knowledge of a certain intended outcome or desired state in mind.
This is usually referred to as the target state. The target state is defined
in terms of the attainment of... (more)
Keeping your enterprise data safe and secure is more important now than it
ever has been. IT has always been an ever-changing industry, but in recent
years, it has been changing more and more quickly. Now, thanks to the cloud,
big data, and mobile devices all expanding at once, it may seem like the
entire IT field is completely different every other day. This means your
company is going to almost always be re-evaluating and upgrading your network
security tools and methods. It's hard to deal with the current threats to
your data, never mind prepare for new ones.
Fortunately, while it is stressful to keep up with this changing world, it's
not impossible. If your team is up to the challenge and is dedicated to
protecting your network and the big data you collect, it is possible. Here
are five techniques you can use to eliminate a large number of threats and
secure yo... (more)
Digital technology innovations and advancements, and our adoption of them,
have changed us. We are different consumers, employers and employees. Our
expectations have increased. We have become mobile, impatient and demanding.
We are global. We demand immediate, accurate and real-time responses. We use
our technology not just for reading historic events and news, but also for
predicting our future turn while navigating at 60 MPH.
Today we want personalized and contextually relevant experiences. We want
digital experiences that are beautiful, simple and elegant. We want instant
access to all products, services, news, information and friends' status. We
want to share our lives instantly and globally. We want to find things, buy
things, move money and complete transactions from anywhere at anytime. We
want to work from anywhere and have all the information we need instan... (more)
Logicalis chief technologist defines the new ideology of hybrid IT
The next BriefingsDirect thought leader interview explores how digital
disruption demands that businesses develop a new ideology of hybrid IT.
We'll hear how such trends as Internet of things (IoT), distributed IT, data
sovereignty requirements, and pervasive security concerns are combining to
challenge how IT operates. And we'll learn how IT organizations are shifting
to become strategists and internal service providers, and how that supports
adoption of hybrid IT. We will also delve into how converged and
hyper-converged infrastructures (HCI) provide an on-ramp to hybrid cloud
strategies and adoption.
To help us define a new ideology for hybrid IT, we're joined by Neil
Thurston, Chief Technologist for the Hybrid IT Practice at Logicalis Group in
the UK. The discussion is moderated by Dana Gardner, P... (more)

Searching for the Business Value of Enterprise Architecture
A fairly recent Jason Bloomberg article in Forbes pointed out that
“enterprise architects have used various frameworks and other tools to
document how their organization operates, often with meticulous detail. But
to what end? The cost savings and responsiveness benefits that EA has
purported to deliver have been few and far between. Stories of stalled or
misdirected EA initiatives vastly outnumber bona fide examples of EA efforts
leading to measurable business value. (…) Unfortunately, EA is often
synonymous with the practice of documenting one person’s viewpoint of their
company’s IT. (…) In fact, the notion that the practice of EA has become
all about documentation rather than effecting business change is a common
theme across many boardrooms and IT shops.

Martin Owen, Vice President of Product Management at ERwin, posts on
LinkedIn that
"Enterprise Architecture is arguably one of those jobs that isn't ever
finished. But I'd argue that over analysis is just as damaging to a business
as the opposite. Speed is key in actioning business outcome focussed EA, as
stakeholders won't wait forever for results".

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)
