The Difference Between Web Hosting and Cloud Computing

Cloud Hosting Journal on Ulitzer Yesterday a friend of mine was asking me what I've been doing lately in my spare time. When I mentioned that I'd been doing a lot of messing around with Windows Azure, he was naturally curious. After explaining what Azure is, he asked me what the difference was between Windows Azure, a cloud computing environment, and traditional web hosting scenarios. On a really high level, he's got a valid point : With Azure you can develop your application offline locally and then when you're done you can publish it to a remote host. To the casual observer, this looks exactly like what you might do with a web hosting company that provides space on an IIS box and let's you use ASP.NET and maybe even a little SQL server database. Cloud Companies Rain on Nasdaq

Cloud companies cast a nasty pall over Wall Street Wednesday when they all seemed to drop simultaneously. Reuters said the retreat started when Equinix, the big hosting company, said it had to cut prices to keep long-term customers after it acquired Switch & Data earlier this year and lowered its revenue guidance. Shares in Citrix, Saavis, Rackspace, NetSuite, VMware, Terremark, Red Hat, Akamai, Salesforce.com, F5, Islion, Teradata, CommVault, Tibco and Radwqare were all badly bruised by the flight. McKinsey & Co - Clearing the Air on Cloud Computing

Late last year I received a phone call from McKinsey & Co in regards to helping provide some insights into the cost benefits of moving to a cloud computing environment. For one reason or another we were not able to connect to complete the discussion, which after the last couple days seems like a shame because that very report has been generating a tonne of buzz.  The McKinsey & Co. report titled Clearing the Air on Cloud Computing was recently made public and has been causing quite the uproar. Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and others have all written pieces quote the report saying "clouds are NOT very cost-effective" According to the Forbes article, they (McKinsey & Co) conclude that outsourcing a typical corporate data center to a cloud service would more than double the cost.
