Measuring DevOps Success in Your Software Delivery Pipeline

When it comes to measuring the success of your DevOps rollout, it can be
challenging to identify the right metrics that will provide intelligence
while avoiding the trap of vanity metrics that indicate action—but not
necessarily progress—towards the outcome you’re looking for.
In my experience, the most valuable metric of all is the lead time between
when you make a commit in source control and when that change makes it to
your consumers. Some very mature organizations have even been able to link
this metric to validated learning or planned outcomes in production (i.e.,
user engagement, revenue, or even a pivot decision). This sort of full-cycle
measurement closes the DevOps build-measure-learn loop and gives you
unparalleled insight into the performance of your overall delivery metrics.

A key challenge that retailers face today is the difficulty of accurately judging where they are on the digital maturity curve relative to their competitors. There appears to be little expertise in making this assessment; for example, 79% of digital leaders don’t know they are ranked as leaders, and only 56% of retailers ranked as average in our study believe they are at this level. The other 44% in the average category mistakenly believe they are either leaders or laggards. The lack of competitive clarity makes it even more difficult to develop an effective competitive strategy.

I am so blessed with smart friends, and I am fortunate to count John Morley among that group. John recently introduced me to Stanford’s Design School (d.school). One of the biggest epiphanies that emerged from our research for the report, “How Digital Thinking Separates Retail Leaders from Laggards” is the difference between leaders and laggards. Digital leaders see digital transformation as a positive, while digital laggards express far more fears and concerns related to digital technologies. In fact, almost 72% of digital laggards are concerned they are wasting money by investing in digital technologies, but only 25% of digital leaders share those apprehensions.
I’m told that it has been 21 years since Scrum became public when Jeff Sutherland and I presented it at an Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages & Applications (OOPSLA) workshop in Austin, TX, in October of 1995. Time sure does fly. Things mature. I’m still in the same building and at the same company where I first formulated Scrum.[1] Initially nobody knew of Scrum, yet it is now an open source body of knowledge translated into more than 30 languages[2] People use Scrum worldwide for developing software and other uses I never anticipated[3].
