NFV Microservices - Architecture for Next Generation Digital Service
Providers
By Neil McEvoy
Telcos embarking on a journey to adopt and exploit the NFV trend face a big
challenge of existing legacy complexity, and a key message I have been
marketing is that there already are best practices that can be reused from
the Enterprise sector, especially from leading ‘digital natives' like
Netflix and Linkedin.
NTT Communications is a great example of this, employing the same
‘toolchain' of DevOps apps like Github, Ansible, Docker and Jenkins to do
exactly that, better automate their own operations practices such as
distributing NMS updates across multiple global data centers.
The other key ingredient of the Cloud Native formula is ‘microservices',
the approach to Cloud-centric software engineering pioneered by Netflix, that
is the architecture equivalent of ‘eating an el... (more)
Blockchain Identity - Keystone Foundation for Digital Democracy and Society
By Neil McEvoy
As good Venn diagrams always show it's the intersection areas that offer the
sweet spot for trends and markets, and an especially potent one is the
intersection of Cloud computing, with the blockchain and also digital
identity, particularly when considered within contexts such as Digital
Democracy.
Given the diversity of each field alone there are multiple perspectives to
this, more the start of a conversation rather than a definitive design.

Containers as a Platform for Autonomic Computing
By Neil McEvoy
An overall theme of cloud computing and the specific practices within it is
fundamentally one of automation. The core value of technology is to
continually automate low level procedures to free up people to work on more
value add activities, ultimately leading to the utopian goal of full
Autonomic Computing.
For example a great way to define your plan for DevOps tool chain adoption is
through this lens. In this TechTarget article they outline a simple maturity
model for planning this.

As the title suggests one way to approach the ‘Platform Business Model'
(described in detail in our library section) is to consider how it is being
adapted for specific industry sectors, via Cloud-centric acronyms such as:
GaaP - Government as a Platform BaaP - Banking as a Platform TaaP - Telco as
a Platform
With a key goal of describing practical aspects of the trend and of course
our Cloud focus, this aspect is one of the headline themes of our Platform
ebook.
The agenda will include these specific industry scenarios and we'll explore
them to illicit the key ingredients of a c... (more)
As the Microsoft Azure CTO explains microservices represents a major
inflection point for the IT industry - An Application Revolution Powered by
the Cloud. They themselves are pioneering the approach through new products
like ‘Cognitive Microservices‘.
My personal opinion is that they can be defined as the next major milestone
in software engineering ever since, well software was invented and run on
mainframes, they are that much of a landmark. They will re-write the agenda
of software practices across corporations right through university
curriculum.
One critical aspect of cou... (more)
