Operational Hadoop and the Lambda Architecture for Streaming Data
Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and
fast incoming streams of data. Predictive maintenance, supply chain
optimization, and Internet-of-Things analysis are examples where Hadoop
provides the scalable storage, processing, and analytics platform to gain
meaningful insights from granular data that is typically only valuable from a
large-scale, aggregate view. One architecture useful for capturing and
analyzing streaming data is the Lambda Architecture, representing a model of
how to analyze real-time and historical data together.
In his session at Big Data Expo, Dale Kim, Director of Industry Solutions at
MapR, covered the practice of capturing canonical data "as it lands" as a

Many of my blogs promote the business benefits of the data lake, both from a
“save me more money” as well as the “make me more money”
perspectives. But I fear that I’m making this thing called the data lake
sound like a “silver bullet" [1] – just drop the data into the data lake
and everything magically works. But much like in the world of data
warehousing, there is significant work that needs to be done under the covers
– in areas such as metadata management, data governance and security – to
ensure that the data lake will perform for a business in a production
environment. Many of the processes and techniques we learned in the data
warehouse will benefit us here, though there are many new tools to be aware
of that can help us in the operationalization task.

Information Technology has advanced in different areas at different speeds.
This has always been true, as people found workable solutions to the problems
that faced them today, most often before there was a market for those
solutions. While things like virtualization and eventually cloud computing
grew slowly, programming languages sat at the same point for around a decade
before the current round of new languages and approaches—Python, Ruby,
Node, Swift—came about. These things seem unrelated, but there is a union
of the two sets of changes that we are about to see blossom.

Building a Hybrid Data Pipeline for Salesforce and Hadoop
My team embarked on building a data lake for our sales and marketing data to
better understand customer journeys. This required building a hybrid data
pipeline to connect our cloud CRM with the new Hadoop Data Lake. One
challenge is that IT was not in a position to provide support until we proved
value and marketing did not have the experience, so we embarked on the
journey ourselves within the product marketing team for our line of business
within Progress.

I happened to be in India last November when prime minister Modi announced the demonetization program, where 86% of the currency in the form of two paper bills (Rs. 500 and 1000 denomination) were made defunct.
