DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an
emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that's changing with
microservices architectures.

In her session at DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks,
focused on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed
to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro)
services and why that means an expansion into "the network" for DevOps.

Orchestrating Distributed Deployments with Docker and Containers
Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship,
and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is
particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful
implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism - which is
precisely one of the features of Docker.

Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are
increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead
of being reserved to the largest, most complex application stacks. But those
architectures bring a new set of challenges. Breaking down an application
into many smaller components means that each individual piece is simpler and
easier to reason with; but now we need something to tie all thos... (more)
2016 has been an amazing year for Docker and the container industry. We had
3 major releases of Docker engine this year , and tremendous increase in
usage. The community has been following along and contributing amazing Docker
resources to help you learn and get hands-on experience. Here's some of the
top read and viewed content for the year:
Releases
Of course releases are always really popular, particularly when they fit
requests we had from the community. In particular, we had:
Docker for Mac & Docker for Windows Beta and GA release blog posts, and the
video
Docker 1.12 Built-in Orchestration release, and the DockerCon keynote where
we announced it
And the release of the Docker for AWS and Azure beta
Windows Containers
When Microsoft made Windows 2016 generally available, people rushed to

The Automated Docker Container Deployment Pipeline
Docker containers have brought great opportunities to shorten the deployment
process through continuous integration and the delivery of applications and
microservices. This applies equally to enterprise data centers as well as the
cloud.
In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Jari Kolehmainen, founder and CTO of
Kontena, will discuss solutions and benefits of a deeply integrated
deployment pipeline using technologies such as container management
platforms, Docker containers, and the drone.io Cl tool. He also will
demonstrate deployment of a CI/CD pipeline using container management, as
well as show how to deploy a containerized application through a continuous
delivery pipeline.

Culture: Change or Die
All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing
culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less
amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced
by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider
culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key
team members at all levels of the organization. This culture and entrenched
interests usually throw a wrench in the works because of misaligned
incentives.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit 20th Cloud Expo, Greg Bledsoe, a managing
consultant at Accenture, will discuss an algorithmic method that even someone
with no positional power who desires to be an agent of change can implement
to achieve cultural transformation and smooth the transition to overcome
these obstacles... (more)

DevOps and Microservices - An In-Depth Look at Security Challenges
DevOps and microservices are permeating software engineering teams broadly,
whether these teams are in pure software shops but happen to run a business,
such Uber and Airbnb, or in companies that rely heavily on software to run
more traditional business, such as financial firms or high-end manufacturers.

Microservices and DevOps have created software development and therefore
business speed and agility benefits, but they have also created problems;
specifically, they have created software security issues.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 19th Cloud Expo,Co-Founder of Aporeto,
talked about these issues, covering both the challenges and solutions that
organizations are seeing today.

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in
enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and
increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes
more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital
exhaust' from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing,
APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things,
and now even blockchain.
In this power panel at @DevOpsSummit 19th Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps
Conference Chair Andi Mann, Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategy marketing and
evangelism manager at Red Hat; Dave Bilbrough, product evangelist for the
Adobe Marketing Cloud; and Paul Peissner, Customer Success Specialist at

Containers as a Platform for Autonomic Computing
By Neil McEvoy
An overall theme of cloud computing and the specific practices within it is
fundamentally one of automation. The core value of technology is to
continually automate low level procedures to free up people to work on more

Autonomic Computing.
For example a great way to define your plan for DevOps tool chain adoption is
through this lens. In this TechTarget article they outline a simple maturity
model for planning this.

The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.

@MicroservicesExpo Stories By Elizabeth White Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle.
