Hadoop in the Cloud
Traditional on-premises data centers have long been the domain of modern data
platforms like Apache Hadoop, meaning companies who build their business on
public cloud were challenged to run Big Data processing and analytics at
scale. But recent advancements in Hadoop performance, security, and most
importantly cloud-native integrations, are giving organizations the ability
to truly gain value from all their data.

Due of the rise of Hadoop, many enterprises are now deploying their first
small clusters of 10 to 20 servers.
At this small scale, the complexity of operating the cluster looks and feels
like general data center servers.
It is not until the clusters scale, as they inevitably do, when the pain
caused by the exponential complexity becomes apparent. We've seen this
problem occur time and time again.
In his session at Big Data Expo, Greg Bruno, Vice President of Engineering
and co-founder of StackIQ, described why clusters are so different from farms
of single-purpose servers that reside in traditional data centers, and why
without an automated solution that can address the cluster requirements, real
pain is coming and failure is certain.

Actian Corporation has announced the latest version of the Actian Vector in
Hadoop (VectorH) database, generally available at the end of July. VectorH is
based on the same query engine that powers Actian Vector, which recently
doubled the TPC-H benchmark record for non-clustered systems at the 3000GB
scale factor (see tpc.org/3323).
The ability to easily ingest information from different data sources and
rapidly develop queries to make better business decisions is becoming
increasingly important, particularly for those companies looking to respond
to changes real-time or explore machine-learning. When paired with Actian
VectorH, the industry's fastest Enterprise SQL database that sits natively in
Hadoop, Spark users have a new powerful way to help derive true business
value from their data.
"VectorH fits naturally in the Hadoop architecture and delivers end-to-end ... (more)
Making Apache Hadoop Less Retro: Bringing Standards to Big Data
Ten short years ago, Apache Hadoop was just a small project deployed on a few
machines at Yahoo and within a few years, it had truly become the backbone of
Yahoo's data infrastructure. Additionally, the current Apache Hadoop market
is forecasted to surpass $16 billion by 2020.
This might lead you to believe that Apache Hadoop is currently the backbone
of data infrastructures for all enterprises; however, widespread enterprise
adoption has been shockingly low.
While the platform is a key technology for gaining business insights from
organizational Big Data, its penetration into enterprises has not lived up to
Hadoop's game-changing business potential. In fact, according to Gartner,
"Despite considerable hype and reported successes for early adopters, 54
percent of survey respondents report no plans to inv... (more)

Back in 2001 (wow – seems like yesterday!), F5 introduced the first-ever,
open/Web services API for network devices called iControl. With it, it
sparked a major shift in the way companies could look at integrating network
devices with applications. Leading software vendors figured it out. And,
thousands of companies since then have used iControl to build custom
monitoring apps, management solutions that more closely fit their internal
processes, and even automate some cool stuff including enabling applications
to tell the network how to deliver them.
While all fine and dandy (and fun to be a part of personally), the most
important decision and event was the willingness to embrace SOAP/XML. By
doing this (kudos to Joe Pruitt, BTW, for this call… it wasn’t without
some feisty internal debate, truth be told), it opened up API access to our
gear from virtually any SOAP... (more)

@ThingsExpo Stories By Elizabeth White Web Real-Time Communication APIs have quickly revolutionized what browsers are capable of. In addition to video and audio streams, we can now bi-directionally send arbitrary data over WebRTC's PeerConnection Data Channels. With the advent of Progressive Web Apps and new hardware APIs such as WebBluetooh and WebUSB, we can finally enable users to stitch together the Internet of Things directly from their browsers while communicating privately and securely in a decentralized way. Jan. 20, 2017 03:00 AM EST Reads: 777 | By Liz McMillan WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data? In her session at @ThingsExpo, Dr Silvia Pfeiffer, WebRTC Applications Team Lead at National ICT Australia, looked at differ... Jan. 20, 2017 02:30 AM EST Reads: 5,012 | By Liz McMillan The security needs of IoT environments require a strong, proven approach to maintain security, trust and privacy in their ecosystem. Assurance and protection of device identity, secure data encryption and authentication are the key security challenges organizations are trying to address when integrating IoT devices. This holds true for IoT applications in a wide range of industries, for example, healthcare, consumer devices, and manufacturing.

Jan. 20, 2017 02:00 AM EST Reads: 6,571 | By Liz McMillan With all the incredible momentum behind the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, it is easy to forget that not a single CEO wakes up and wonders if “my IoT is broken.” What they wonder is if they are making the right decisions to do all they can to increase revenue, decrease costs, and improve customer experience – effectively the same challenges they have always had in growing their business. The exciting thing about the IoT industry is now these decisions can be better, faster, and smarter. Now ... Jan. 20, 2017 01:45 AM EST Reads: 4,263 | By Pat Romanski Who are you? Jan. 20, 2017 12:45 AM EST Reads: 4,108 | By Elizabeth White Fact is, enterprises have significant legacy voice infrastructure that’s costly to replace with pure IP solutions. How can we bring this analog infrastructure into our shiny new cloud applications? There are proven methods to bind both legacy voice applications and traditional PSTN audio into cloud-based applications and services at a carrier scale. Some of the most successful implementations leverage WebRTC, WebSockets, SIP and other open source technologies.

This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights. Jan. 20, 2017 12:00 AM EST Reads: 6,335 | By Elizabeth White You think you know what’s in your data. But do you? Most organizations are now aware of the business intelligence represented by their data. Data science stands to take this to a level you never thought of – literally.
