DevOps - The Symptom of an Agile Organization DevOps is all the rage these days and with good reason as it promises to reduce the time-to-market for new applications. It also promises to improve change management, allowing teams to deploy changes to their applications quickly and efficiently. However, DevOps isn't something you buy, install, or implement; rather it is the symptom of an appropriate organizational system. In his session at @DevOpsSummit New York, Mark Thiele, EVP, Data Center Technologies at SUPERNAP International, discussed how to get to the right organizational model that will allow DevOps practices to flourish. Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Speaker Bio Mark Thiele's responsibilities at SUPERNAP include evaluating new data center technologies, developing new sites, identifying partners and providing industry thought leadership. [slides] @Docker Deployments | @DevOpsSummit @JPetazzo #SDN #DevOps

Orchestrating Distributed Deployments with Docker and Containers Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism - which is precisely one of the features of Docker. Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead of being reserved to the largest, most complex application stacks. But those architectures bring a new set of challenges. Breaking down an application into many smaller components means that each individual piece is simpler and easier to reason with; but now we need something to tie all thos... (more)

Data and Economics 101 | @CloudExpo #IoT #AI #M2M #BigData #Analytics

As more organizations try to determine where best to deploy their limited budgets to support data and analytics initiatives, they realize a need to ascertain the financial value of their data and analytics - which means basic economic concepts are coming into play.  While many of you probably took an economics class in college not too long ago, some more "seasoned" readers may be rusty. The starting point for this topic began with a blog that I wrote several months ago titled "Determining the Economic Value of Data" and this key observation that started that conversation: Data is an unusual currency. Most currencies exhibit a one-to-one transactional relationship. For example, the quantifiable value of a dollar is considered to be finite - it can only be used to buy one item or service at a time, or a person can only do one paid job at a time. But measuring the va... (more)

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust' from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain. In this power panel at @DevOpsSummit 19th Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps Conference Chair Andi Mann, Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategy marketing and evangelism manager at Red Hat; Dave Bilbrough, product evangelist for the Adobe Marketing Cloud; and Paul Peissner, Customer Success Specialist at CollabNet, explored this emerging use of Big Data generated by the digital business to complete the DevO... The Pros and Cons of an Industry Cloud Application | @CloudExpo #API #Cloud

When call centers first came about in the 1960s, they were built over PBX systems. Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) are essentially a small-scale version of the telephone exchange and are typically handled by one of the few telephone network providers in the country. Fast forward to today, a call center software provider does not need to own even the VoIP line that is necessary to handle communication. The software can simply connect to third party VoIP services with the help of an API and get started on their service. The cloud has brought down the cost of operating a business and while this is a good thing for the consumers, it also means a rise in the number of competitors one has to deal with. Service providers in saturated industries have tried to carve a niche by launching what are now known as industry cloud applications. In short, these are niche cloud applicat... (more)

WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data? In her session at @ThingsExpo, Dr Silvia Pfeiffer, WebRTC Applications Team Lead at National ICT Australia, looked at differ...

With all the incredible momentum behind the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, it is easy to forget that not a single CEO wakes up and wonders if “my IoT is broken.” What they wonder is if they are making the right decisions to do all they can to increase revenue, decrease costs, and improve customer experience – effectively the same challenges they have always had in growing their business. The exciting thing about the IoT industry is now these decisions can be better, faster, and smarter. Now ...
"Splunk basically takes machine data and we make it usable, valuable and accessible for everyone. The way that plays in DevOps is - we need to make data-driven decisions to delivering applications," explained Andi Mann, Chief Technology Advocate at Splunk and @DevOpsSummit Conference Chair, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @DevOpsSummit at 19th Cloud Expo, held November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Security, data privacy, reliability, and regulatory compliance are critical factors when evaluating whether to move business applications from in-house, client-hosted environments to a cloud platform. Quality assurance plays a vital role in ensuring that the appropriate level of risk assessment, verification, and validation takes place to ensure business continuity during the migration to a new cloud platform.
Who are you? How do you introduce yourself? Do you use a name, or do you greet a friend by the last four digits of his social security number? Assuming you don’t, why are we content to associate our identity with 10 random digits assigned by our phone company? A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.
